So based on my knowledge of rules and understanding the break downs of phases, turns and rounds I do have a question I would like answered.

If I have Darth Tyranus LOTDS who has both Lightsaber Block and Lightsaber Riposte, and he is hit by a successful attack from another character with the melee special ability...he must spend a force point to riposte first if I so choose, before I can choose to block correct?

Essentially I can't see the outcome of the block before I riposte.

That is correct. You must Choose whether or not to riposte before blocking.

I guess in real life you would decide if you wanted to riposte first then block accordingly. (to set up the Riposte)

I would think you would need to find out if you survived the hit to be able to counter with a Riposte though, otherwise you could riposte and kill the attacking enemy before he gets the chance to finish his attack (thus taking no damage) so I would say you should declare the Riposte first but, roll for block before you attack to see if you take the damage first, then make your counter attack roll.
That my 2 cents

@Deathwielded

Good thought!

I wonder if there is someone who can clarify it up a bit more...like how it was done at tournaments and stuff.

No, that's not correct. From the resolving effects list:

Quote:
10. Resolve effects that trigger when this character is hit. Some effects trigger (or can voluntarily be triggered) when the target is hit by an attack, such as Evade, Flurry, Lightsaber Block, Lightsaber Deflect, Lightsaber Reflect, and Lightsaber Riposte. (Force Points may be used to reroll saves on this step, if the character is still able to use Force Points during this turn.) If multiple effects trigger, use the simultaneous effects rule to determine the order in which they are resolved. You may see the results of one effect before resolving another, but no single effect may be resolved more than once. For example, a character can never Lightsaber Deflect the same attack twice. (Effects such as Flurry and Lightsaber Riposte begin new attack sequences that interrupt this sequence; resolve the new attack completely, then continue where you left off with the original attack.)

Since Block and Riposte are in the same step, you can do them in either order.

I remember that you have to choose whether or not to riposte before blocking being a printed ruling. But I don't see it at first glance through documents.

But I also think that you could resolve them in either order as you noted.

I think you're confusing it with Djem So Style. The glossary entry for that specifically states that "If this character also has Lightsaber Riposte or another ability that lets the character make an immediate attack against the attacker, then the decision to use those abilities must be made prior to resolving the save for Djem So Style". So you DO have to choose Riposte or Block or whatever before you resolve Djem So, but Riposte and Block can be decided/resolved in either order.

This is only because of the specific wording of the glossary for Djem So.

yeah, Dan's right, the default is the acting player chooses order of simultaneous effects.

Bodyguard and Djem So (possibly others) are exceptions.
