I thought it was pretty good. The different dice to signify different attacks was a nice element. All the characters had different methods of activating special effects and abilities and there is a nice tactical element to it. Its a bit dicey because every character gets to roll against an attack but really no more than SWM. The LOS system is simpler and there is no cover or the like but distance does make shooting harder. Commanders can make pieces move or take an action (each character gets 2 actions a turn).
i certainly wanted to finish the scenario. It probably something i'll at least get the base set for.
To be honest, though, its a bit like shooting fish in a barrel; i like the source, i like minis and i like games.

I didn't play this one, but I did watch it for about 10 minutes. I was interested, but had just demoed a game called Decent by FFG, and it was a lot of fun. Watching another group playing Imperial Assault, it looked like the same game with a star wars back drop. I'm sure it has its own unique points, and I'll probably pick it up (star wars trumps generic fantasy in my books). Anyone familiar with both games to know how they deviate?

I'm only familiar with Imperial Assault based on what I've read and watched (which is most of the information available), but I've played Descent, both 1st and 2nd editions. And yes, Imperial Assault is intended to be similar. When they announced it one of the marketing points was that it was based on the Descent engine. It definitely has differences, and feels kind of like a combination of the best parts of 1st and 2nd edition of Descent, but the core of it is very similar.

Off the top of my head,
1. The activations are different. It now alternates between the group and the Imperial player, instead of all the group and then the Overlord.
2. How the Imperial player gets reinforcements is different than the Overlord. You spend threat to bring things out, whereas in Descent, it depends on the quest and is static.
3. I think Imperial Assault may not be doing the player type and class, instead focusing on more personal options for heroes.
4. The personal sidequests is what has me personally interested. Specific missions depending on what heroes you have adds a lot of personalization to the campaign, makes it feel a bit more RPG like. It also adds a bit of a meta decision on which hero to be.
