I've been through the sequence of events looking for how to resolve a death shot when a character with self destruct "blows up" next to the death shooter. Is there any time at which the character with SD is removed before the DS so that the DS character can target a different enemy? The way I read it, the SD character isn't removed in any situation till after the DS ability kicks in but I'm hoping I'm wrong.

Pretty much, no.
You would need an ability like Rolling Cleave (assuming you killed the SD piece), Counter Push, or anything else that would allow you to get out of adjacency with the SD character, AND, then be able to target something else while the DS piece is still that close to you. (no cover, Accurate etc).
