i'll go first, if i could design a single piece for the game i would design: I really like the flavor of this piece, and how it can be used in so many different ways. This piece should help new republic with draw fire, evade, and a collection of ways to clear out swarms.
Streen, Leader of the Jedi Praxeum 39
Hit Points: 120 Defense: 20 Attack: 13 Damage: 20
Special Abilities Unique Melee Attack (Can attack only adjacent enemies) Evade (When hit by an attack from a nonadjacent enemy, this character takes no damage with a save of 11) Draw Fire (If an enemy targets an ally within 6 squares of this character, you may force that enemy to target this character instead if it can; save 11)
Praxeum Instructor (At the start of the skirmish Select One Unique New Republic follower with a Force Rating and a lower printed cost. That character gains 1 Force Point and Lightsaber Precision.)
Praxeum Headmaster (At the start of the skirmish this characters gets +1 force point for each unique new republic ally that has a force rating in the same squad as this character up to a maximum of 7 force points. This character cannot gain force renewal or spend force points from other characters.)
Force Powers Force 2 Lightsaber Block (Force 1: When hit by a melee attack, this character takes no damage with a save of 11) Lightsaber Precision (Force 1: This character gets +10 Damage on his next attack) Force Whirlwind 2 (Force 3, replaces attacks: range 8; 30 damage to target and each character adjacent to that target; save 16) Force Storm 4 (Force 4, replaces turn: 40 Damage to all characters within 3 squares)
Commander Effect Allies within 6 squares with a lower printed cost than this character who have a Lightsaber gain Lightsaber Block.

For me, I want the characters named Rebel Trooper to get some play. Leia in the old Star Wars CCG had a lot of ways that she inspired the regular troopers, so that go me thinking. A few years ago I designed a Leia with the following abilities: Princess Leia of AlderaanMain abilities below: Immediate Trooper Reserves 20 (If you roll exactly 5, 10, 15, or 20 for initiative, you can add up to 20 points of Trooper characters from this character's faction to your squad, adjacent to this character, immediately before your first activation of the round) High Profile (This character is not granted cover from characters or low objects) Rapport (Allies named Rebel Trooper cost 1 less when in the same squad as this character) Commander EffectAllies named Rebel Trooper with line of sight to this character gain +3 attack, +3 Defense, and Avoid Defeat. Adjacent allies named Rebel Trooper gain Bodyguard I also made a much less powerful version of the Tantive IV trooper years ago, with the goal if getting some more rebel trooper play. It kind of went hand-in-hand with the Leia to really get the flavor I was looking for: Tantive IV Trooper

I know I am "cheating" by posting twice but there was something in a thread a few weeks ago or so about a cheap hologram jedi with affinities for a bunch of factions who granted bonuses/abilities to force users.
I am not sure what happened to that discussion, but I really like that idea because of the versatility and the low cost. I really like the upcoming obi/ani but I think billiv is right that it is too expensive to be a solution to the perceived weakness of melee.

I would try and go through, and give each faction, something to combat the big squads that are currently running around, whilst making them not too crazy good in their own faction. Along the lines of this
Darth Maul, Sith Operative 46-56 points
HP 110 DEF 20 ATT 14 DMG 20
Unique Melee Shien style(did he use this?) Double Greater mobile Speed 8 Phobis device
Force 5 Spinning blade attack (force 2, pretty much the same as spinning blade attack) Riposte Rage
This would counter a lot of things in today's game. Riposte for strafe, shine style for shooters ( Daala, BX's, klats), spinning blade for swarms, as well as not being too broken inside his own faction. Sure he can be boosted the hell out of with force spirits, but who can't these days.
It's not a silver bullet, but I think it would definitely give sith a nice option against the gatekeepers of today.

Cool i like it.
This is a highpowered high cost piece that can hold his own against shooters, melee, basically everything lol:
Darth Sidious, Legacy of the Darkside 82
Hit Points: 140 Defense: 22 Attack: 15 Damage: 20
Special Abilities Unique Melee Attack (Can attack only adjacent enemies) Triple Attack (On his turn, this character can make 2 extra attacks instead of moving) Intuition (Once per round, after initiative is determined, this character can immediately move up to his speed before any other character activates) Tactician +4 (Add +4 to the initiative roll except on a roll of 1) Swordmaster (+3 attack against adjacent opponents with the melee ability. If all three of this characters attacks hit, the third attack counts as a critical. Parry cannot be used against this character)
Force Powers Force 2 Force Renewal 2 (This character gets 2 Force points each time he activates) Master of the Force 2 (May spend Force points up to 2 times in a single turn) Master Speed (Force 1: This character can move 6 extra squares on his turn as part of his move) Illusion (Force 1: When hit by an attack, this character takes no damage unless the attacker makes a save of 11) Sith Rage (Force 1: +10 Damage on all attacks this turn) Force Lightning 2 (Force 2, replaces attacks: range 6; 30 damage to target and 2 characters adjacent to that target)
Commander Effect Unique allies within 6 squares that use Force Powers which replace attacks cost 1 less to use. Force powers that cost 1 ignore this commander effect.

I would prefer and ability that isnt melee hate persay, is there one that just allows you to attack an enemy when you otherwise wouldnt be able to? Jedi Reflexes?

+1 to the sweet ideas so far, and the wording of this challenge is really interesting. Normally I would say that the one piece would be an epic Grievous, but with high hopes for him in the next epic set I would have selected Abeloth. A 200 point piece monster reserves one-woman"ish"-army to battle. But for the game means to me to fix what is wrong these days. I would really really like to post two, my Jolee Bindo that is Jedi exile-like but hands out a free deflect each turn, or the piece who I feel would benefit the pieces that need the most help in the game, huges. So my choice to help the truly weakest characters in the game: http://www.bloomilk.com/Custom/23185/battle-droid-artillery-officerBattle Droid Artillery Officer Cost 10 HP 50 Def 13 Atk 0 Dmg 10 Special Abilities Droid (Immune to critical hits; not subject to commander effects) Forward Positioning (Set up anywhere on your half of the battle map) Relay Orders (Each allied commander can count distance from this character as well as from itself for the purpose of commander effects) Missile Upgrades (Huge Separatist droid allies gain Advanced Missiles 20 and Overload.) Commander Effect Droids are subject to this effect. Huge Separatist Droid characters in your squad can set up anywhere on your half of the battle map. Huge Separatist Droid allies gain Relay Orders.

Huges biggest problem is being huge, and awkwardly getting stuck everywhere, behind diplomat walls or having to take the long way around to get to gambit. Having them already patrolling an area somewhat mitigates their awkward size and allows them to at least be in gambit
