Then they continued to produce the same 120 minis per year.
The difference was that suddenly instead of buying 4 cases to complete a set I bought one. So sales drop off a bit. Well with a licensing agreement a small drop in sales is just enough.

why would anyone buy a booster pack now when you can get a case and only need 4 figs to complete the set? you spend $109 for the case then track down the rest either buy trade or buying singles. The LGS makes money by people buying boosters and paying money to the store. If no one does that the game withers away and dies.
40 piece sets are both good and bad IMO. I can get the stuff i want but i think in the long run it hurts more than it helps.
Thats just my opinion. welcome to what happened to my gamestore, now the only one in 30 miles is going out of buisness.... Bingo again. I don't see my game store going out of business because it is pretty diversified, but I can say with certainty that 40 piece sets AND cheap case prices online put a major dent in the booster sales. I may well be the only player that bought a case from the store for the last three sets in a row. They even dropped prices a bunch for DT. I got my case for $126, and minus my good customer discount the final price was below $120 including tax. The stores were definitely hurt by the move to 40pc sets. Unless you pulled a VR (and maybe even then) you weren't getting value even close to the cost of the booster, considering what singles prices have been online.

The stores were hurt but it was cheaper for me to get them all. I was sick of spending over 200, sometimes 300 bucks on a set. Now with 1 case I almost have them all. I love that!!

Thats what happened with me, I could not see myself spending so much money for something that I could get cheaper. I feel for the stores, but I have to feel for my economic well being first. Believe me, If I had the money, I would get my cases from my LGS, but they do not want to compete with online stores. My only concern is that I get the minis that I want. Don't get me wrong, I spend alot of $ at my LGS on Boosters for sealed events. I get my dice, my card sleeves, my Gamesworkshop paint, paint brushes, terrain, Map Loaders, Shirts and deck protectors from them. They get alot of my money, thats why they aren't hurting when it comes to not selling all of their Boosters.

I've spent a small fortune collecting, so trust me, I know how hard and expensive the 60 piece sets are to complete. It is great that you support your store by buying all those other items. Not everyone does that though. With no new SWM product coming after MotF, that type of support will be important as incentive for owners to keep hosting SWM games at many shops, when they could do Magic, Yu Gi Oh or whatever instead and sell an active product. But I digress. It might be easier now, but the thrill is gone (along with the store owner's profits). WotC hurt the retailers at the grass-roots level, and that type of corporate behavior is never good for communities. I'm glad I'm not in that line of business. Also, if you are into trading, it isn't much fun to have 2 or 3 dupes of the rares from the 40pc sets laying around. Anymore, I'll give them away to local players if I can actually find someone that needs them, which isn't often. Oh well, one more case to buy, and then its time to get into customizing

I'm a fan of the 40 piece set as it is easier for me to collect on my limited income. I remember the days of 100$ CS Darth Maul pieces. And buying three or four cases to comeplete a set. Now it is easier, cheaper, more regulated, and just generally better. Also I like that they can focus sets a bit more with three different themes instead of two. Imagine how much complaining there would have been if the clone wars sets were 60 piece and that was half of the years minis right there? (personally I loved CW and GaW sets but I guess that's just me) All in all the 40 piece sets are a welcome change.
