Starship Battles has been out of print for awhile now but the minis are still holding good value.

Sorry if this is a little off-topic, but it's the best place I think I could put this rant:

To me, the question of who gets the authority to create and authorize new minis is a hugely important question and one that closely mirrors government. You could have people running free and creating their own custom stats for pieces almost on the fly as long as their opponent approves, similar to an anarchy. Then the problem is tournaments, which are impossible to run in such a scenario. On the other end, you would have a very small, walled-off group of individuals who invent, authorize, and rigidly enforce the play of their own pieces, much like a tyranny (or WOTC?). Tournaments would be run smooth as glass in that case but unless the designers are freakishly and otherworldly competent, a lot of people will be pissed off. If a democracy were to be enacted and the community got to see various designs for pieces and choose the ones they liked, people would be happy but the populist mentality of going for the shiniest piece would lead to a lot of shortsighted decisions. If a republic-type thing was made where moderators or the like were to choose pieces on behalf of the community, there would be no monopoly by the designers on what went through but a lot of cases would occur where the representatives would put their own interests and views before the community because face it, we're human. And the list keeps going on and on. I think this is the single most important decision we have to make to keep the game going, so let's get to work.

@ Moose.
I don't think that your 'rant' is uncalled for.
it brings up a valid point. We have to take into consideration that yes, there needs to be a governing body. I can see where chaos will ensue if there is a complete disagreement on what needs to be done, and I think that we need to, as a community, put out a bit of confidence that our interests are being addressed, Now there is no easy way to do this, but it needs to be done.
there is a poll up right now that is asking for the opinions of every member of this site on what we should do.
I for one am a Comic Book illustrator, and don't mind working on the art for virtual sets. alot of us are talented in some way or another that could prove to be useful in keeping this game breathing. I think that people need to be appointed by us to see this through.
I know who I would be putting my vote in for the head of the committee, as he has proven for a couple of years that he can handle the work load, and take flack from the masses. That person is Dnemiller.
Not alot of people will agree with my opinion, but we have a person who does love this game, and making the moves to make us happy, whether folks like him or not.
After that, I think some sort of vote needs to be held where other members are appointed positions, in order to have some balance, you have to all groups come to some sort of agreement.

If you really want to have your voice heard, you might want to post over at Gamers. That is the proverbial Ground Zero for all this.

My ISP won't even let me try to become a member, and I'm not sure why.
Everytime I attempt to make a profile, it resets and i have to do it all over again.
So my voice can be heard here, since I can't say anything on gamers.

Lets put the Vset thing aside for a moment, please...

Would you rather have the game continued by another company?
Because I guarantee that if one single Vset is released there will NEVER be another company willing to pick it up.

Ive seen this happen before.

I'd contact either LoboStele or Ruhk (both are Admins on Gamers) on here for help on that, the only reason you wouldn't be allowed to create a member is if you're banned on Gamers. Or you can have a 3rd party (including one of the mods/admins there) create an account and email/PM you the dummy password for you to change. [I'm willing to help you with that]

SOLIDARITY people, if you want Chaos, go somewhere else, because it isn't welcome here.

I'm sorry, I'm mostly staying uninvolved in this mess. But the fact that WoTC declared the line will end after MoTF does not give you the right to tell people what is and is not welcome in this community.

You are neither a moderator on this forum, nor the owner, and as far as I've seen, the rules have not changed because of the announcement.

"Shut out all dissenters to our new fan project!" is certainly not an effective way to gather the "large" group you guys seem to be wanting to to try and continue the game unofficially via a couple of web forums and a bunch of homebrew.

I know this as I moderate a forum to mostly dead RPG games. The more you get catty with people offering valuable critical input, the more you shorten the lifespan of your community.

Which brings me back to the fence.
I'm glad to see that you already called shotgun.

This thread is a mess. It was meant to be collaborative. Instead it’s divisive.

First off, my posts were not written to question or attack anyone, and I apologize for that perception. I have a lot of respect for the hard working members of this community.

Secondly, the original scenarios provided were intentionally designed to be extreme for illustrative purposes. I had hoped the focus would be on the overarching themes and not on the details. Shame on me for thinking that would work in an internet forum.

Thirdly, this thread was meant to work WITH, not against, current initiatives. The reason I posted the thread was to collaboratively discuss an interesting and pertinent topic for the purpose of:
1. Identifying potential pitfalls and negative perceptions,
2. Learning from similar past experiences,
3. Sharing opinions, and
4. Identifying solutions,
5. So that a more informed decision can be made when the time comes to make that decision.

I actually like the idea of virtual sets, and I wanted to get involved in a constructive discussion. But, I obviously failed in my attempt.

If a mod wants to delete this entire thread and the Community agrees. Be my guest. I’m not sure it’s worth the overriding negativity.

I'm sorry if everyone thinks I'm being negative...
I'm just speaking from the standpoint of a gamer who has seen more that one game go into Vsets, and it wasn't pretty...
