We've had this running over on the WotC boards for a bit, but wanted to cross-post over here for those interested. (If the mods feel it is better in custom forum, please move as you see fit.)

StSparks72 and I have been kind of excited to unveil our new SWM Battles theme play concept. As the tournament scene began to dwindle in our area, we started looking for alternate ideas for getting together each month to play a little SWM. Obviously playing themed squads is nothing new, but we wanted to pair up themed builds with theme based maps (including custom maps like those created by AG7, JC, MapMaker, CPreksta, etc). Using various sources we put together two faction based squads that give a fairly accurate representation of that particular scene or event. Keep in mind that perfect accuracy is not the true intent of these battles, it's more of a representation to give you a feel for that particular scene or event. Once the squads are created we playtest them looking for balance and fun. These squads can range anywhere in size from 100pts to 500pts or more. There is no real limit or minimum as to what size each squad can be, it's all about theme. It should be noted that sometimes we have to make choices as to which side a certain piece or pieces should be on, that can also play a big part in determining overall balance.

At any rate, these are meant to be fun battles that can be played at home on a kitchen table with family and friends. So if you're looking for something beyond DCI or the standard SWM tournament scene this is a sure fire way to help. Feel free to use DCI rules if you like, but these squads have been playtested using the kill 'em all style of play. We did use the one activation rule for the player who goes first at the start of each round, but we don't think it's absolutely necessary that you do the same.

In closing, we plan to periodically release new SWM Battles making sure that we let everyone know by posting it right here on this thread. Feel free to add or remove from these squads as needed, although it is important to realize that doing so could easily effect the overall balance. If you don't have a certain piece you can always use a proxy or try other great resources such as Vassal to play out a battle. Please feel free to openly discuss any future ideas that you may have for us, we welcome all new ideas and criticism. Most importantly, if you give one of our SWM Battles a try, be sure to let us know how it turned out.

We have setup a website to host our SWM Battles here:
