After playing Mathias-Ordun's Hoth battle yesterday. I realized I don't know Jack about the rule's of SW mini's. I thought I had a pretty good understanding of them but our battle was a huge wake up call for me. I lost track of what was going on way too many times but lucky for me Mathias knew what to do. So in an effort to learn from my mistakes and blunders, I have a few questions. What do you do to help keep track of what is going on during a Vassal battle? Have a note pad handy? Keep a hard copy of stat cards on hand? I was embarrassed by my lack of game knowledge. Mathias pretty much had to take control of the match due to my limited knowledge of Vassal and the rules of the game. I truly had a lot of fun and would like a re-match at some point. But I'd like to be better prepared so I don't feel so foolish during my next match.

Generally speaking, I always draw the squad out on Bloo milk or have it laid out before I played it, and that a link to the other persons squad may be helpful, so you can check any tadbits at any time so you are constantly aware of what your minis are and are not capble of.
I admit I am a little guility of not knowing my oppoments squad that well at times.

However bloo milk went down at one point. That's when I was thinking I should have a back up plan as well. *Hard copy cards on hand*

Aye, it's always good to back the files up elsewhere. Word documents can be good for that. Though possibly time consuming.

It would be worth downloading MiniManager for those times when BlooMilk is down. Since MiniManager is a program and isn't online, you don't have load times to wait through when comparing squad stats.

Then I thought the same thing, very time consuming. Please post more if you guys have any other idea's.

I build the two squads in Mini Manager, then use the program to compare them, so only the minis used by the players are shown.

Welcome to Vassal, dude. I hope you like it enough to stay for a while.
For swm rules, it is really important to read through the rulebook (clone wars starter set) a couple of times just so that you have a basis for building on. Really, 95+% of the things you need to know you will learn from there. (remember to read the glossary slowly, and think about each item)
Yeah, vassal is unique in the fact that there isn't a person across the table from you to hand you their cards when you have a question, and you can't really get a good read from somebody (emotionally) unless you are talking over skype/ventrilo/etcetera.
Vassal also is unique in another way, though. Almost everybody knows their stuff. It is awesome. I used to be the one that was in charge of judging at my local gaming store, just because I knew those 95+% of the rules that came from (that book that i told you to read ). On vassal, I met all of those people who actually go online and read all of the faq's and rules questions in the rules forums of WotC and other rules forums. You are surrounded by a large group of highly knowledgeable players, so just take advantage of that and have fun playing and learning for a while. In no time you will find out all of the tricks of the trade and start learning advanced strategy.
Happy gaming!

Happy gaming! Thanks for the advice TheStarkiller. I've read through the book's but apparently not enough. lol Have to crack them open again and drill the rule's into my thick skull. Part of my problem was the figure's I was unfamiliar with. I still had a great time and I refuse to give up so you'll see me on there learning.

Basically I have my squad up on Bloomilk. I have my statcards laid in front of me. The minis I am using, for which I have no stat cards, I open them up on bloomilk. Then I get cards/open bloomilk for the minis I am unfamiliar with that my opponent is using.
I also have a copy of the SWM Glossary open, ready for any rules issues that arise. I also use the LOS tool A LOT. If ever I am quiet during a game, I am probably working out a million LOS possibilities.

I learned how to play chess when I was younger and I'm the same way. If I'm quiet I'm working out possibilities in my head.
