It's clear the community wants both changes made. We've had pretty extensive testing of 3-2-1 and can be confident the results are worth doing. 10 point gambit is also a popular change for 200. It doesn't alter the game much other than bringing the worth of gambit back into the range of being worth grabbing. 5 points has become simply too little worth to bother.
As for making changes before Gencon, there's plenty of precedent. We've done it twice as a community before, and WotC did it several times, including the original addition of gambit scoring in 2005.
It's pretty clear that both changes will likely happen. The question is when. Some of us believe there's no reason not to do it now, for the betterment of the game. Waiting another full year seems pointless. Others believe that making any changes before Gencon is a bad idea. But that was more of an issue in the years when we would have 20-30 players who weren't regular forum readers. That's almost non-existent now.
So you decide, what shall we do community?

For clarification, this is voting on making these changes NOW, before GenCon.

Can some one explain simply what 3-2-1 scoring is?

NZ has been using this system for several years, it was greatly considered when we went to 3-2, and ultimately we chose to be conservative at that time. X-wing uses a 5-3-1. It's a good system that further encourages both players to play the game rather than turtle.

adamb0nd wrote:Can some one explain simply what 3-2-1 scoring is? They've been using it in New Zealand for 4 years now. Basically, it's the same 3-2 system that we have (3pts for a full win, 2pts for a tiebreaker win, 0pts for a loss), but this system gives the loser 1pt if he manages to earn 100pts (via kills and gambit) before being defeated. Its purpose is to reward engagement...not just for the winner, but also for the loser. Under the 3-2-1 system, if you're losing a match, you might as well push hard and try to earn 100pts so that you at least get something for your efforts. They have found that in NZ it has helped to encourage direct and aggressive combat, which has been a very positive thing for them. EDIT: Wow, double-ninja'd!

question about 10 pt gambit. do you need a 10 pt character to gain 10 pt gambit?

Just to be clear, a decision has already been made, but numbers really can sway that.

By whom was it made? When? Well, I always have something in mind when I bring up rules updates, but I've always been very flexible in the final product. I just realize that someone's going to gripe about every decision, and one has to be made. I felt the need to make that clear here.

I'm still not clear on what you're saying, though. It sounds like you made the decision. I'm still unsure of what that decision was, and when it was made.

Brad is the final authority on making rule change decisions. He's saying he's made one. But he's also willing to change his mind if the numbers say otherwise or something to that affect.
And we as the community charged him with that responsibility when WotC stopped supporting the game. He's been making these final decisions with community input for 4 years now.

Right, I get that and I support it. I'm still not sure what the decision is (or when it was made, but that's not necessarily all that important).

I am in favor of either one, however i think it should wait until January. Most major rules updates happen in January, not only because it is more convenient, but also because then the regional season is played that way, and it doesn't cause a major change for gen con.

Actually, Trevor, I'll post the entire flow chart when I post or in lieu of posting the update, just so the community can see where I started and where I ended up on this.
