This may be something that others have hashed out, I'm not sure. But it seems like everywhere I turn I hear of someone selling all of their mini's and losing interest in the game. I'm still interested in the game myself, but it's kind of hard to play it when even my kids aren't interested much in it anymore. I'm wondering what factors everyone thinks are leading to this? I've heard some people say that they got tired of having to basically build their squads around the same ideas in order to be competitive: I.E. Wedge or Dodonna and evade, the top 10 squads all being mostly the same etc....

For me it's compounded by a lack of tournaments locally. Yes we have a local gaming store that holds them, but there are a number of problems with it for me. Not the least of which was the fact that hardly none of the tournament games we participated in got counted towards our DCI stats. Add to it with the fact that the store manager seems to favor his friends for the prizes and never really announces ahead of time what the prizes will be, or changes how he's going to give the prizes out (for example one time he decided to give the last place finisher the first pick of the VR's he offered when the last place finisher happened to also be a friend of his). Another time I was basically ripped out of the first place choice when I'd won the tournament fair and square. Actually that happened to me twice, only the first time I won a tourney they said no prizes would be given away (after the fact). The playing space is extremely cramped and not always "family friendly" for younger kids.

Anyway, these are just some things I'm tossing around and wondered if anyone else had some ideas as to the reasons for the downfall. Or is it just a natural thing, as most games eventually lose popularity and go away? Is that what is happening with SWM?

No, I don't think SWM is going anywhere anytime soon. SWM gaming communities come and go, and they sometimes require more effect to make sure they stay around, but I think the game as whole is doing fine. In fact, even if wizards was to stop making the game, the whole SWM gaming community would still keep playing.

If you want help building up your local SWM gaming community, I'm sure there are plenty of people who can help with that.

I'm smiling because I just moved to Los Angeles and already found 2 guys that want to learn how to play. ;)
It's all about how much YOU promote it.

I do have a couple of local venues I've spoken to that might be interested in hosting the tournaments and I've thought about getting the certification to host. But I don't want to waste my time and effort if the game is going to die in a year or two.

Don't think of it as a waste, whatever the outcome may be. At least it will be handy as you'll have some experience running events. SWM will last long after DCI/Wizos stops supporting it. Like Huk said, its about how much You care about it.

I don't like the sound of that Store owner. I would definitely go somewhere else.

I do have about 25 years experience running games going all the way back to the 80's running mostly RPG games and continuing to the present. I've just never ran a Star Wars mini's tourney, but I don't think it would be difficult and it would definitely be fair with the prizes, rules, etc... spelled out from the beginning.

I guess what I would like to hear is more reasons from people who are quitting as to the why's. Like some people I know who were all gung ho about mini's before Galaxy at War just quite suddenly dropped the game almost completely.

Bingo, you've got the know how and the love for the game, I totally encourage you to continue along this line of investigation. I believe the certification is a simple online test to become a TO (tournament organizer). Dean (dnemiller) ought to be able to help point you in the right direction for further knowledge (ie how to report/set up/etc)

I've heard one big problem people have is that basically the tops teams all seemed to be built around the same pieces (Luke's landspeeder, Reiken, etc...)

I know what you mean, I've had a few friends drop out from the game after being apart of it for years.. but that life. Sometimes you get enthusiastic for different things from time to time. I know that even my interest in the game waxes and wanes every so often. if you're willing to spend the time, I'm sure you'll be able to find locally more people with an interest in strategy games, or a love of all thing Star Wars.. or both!

The funny thing is that when I first started buying the mini's it was mainly just to use for the Saga Edition RPG, but my kids really got into mini's gung ho and dragged me into it. The irony is that I'm the only one still interested in playing now. That takes away a big part of why I got interested in it to begin with (i.e. dad hanging out with his boys).

That's true, a lot of top DCI squads are very similar as there will usually be something that the Tier 1 players (fingersandteeth, LoboStele, TimmerB, Bill, Dean) find that works very very well.

we generally refer to it as the 'Meta'. Things that will win(a very simplified explanation to be sure, Bill posted some great articles on SWMGamers a while back about this if you're interested) most to all of the time.

But a National/International Meta is different then the Local Meta. There are ways to promote a less win-all-the-time attitude and a more let's-have-fun attitude even while running DCI tournaments. Dynamic Duo, Terrific Trio and Fantastic Four, as well as Tile Wars.. Using custom maps(provided everyone has access ala JediCartographers Map Packs), putting in place certain rules[like; no non-melee characters, or Squad must contain only uniques..] and even every so often run non-DCI events like Dream Team(no faction rules) or special scenario (SWM Zombies or some of the Mos Eisley Meltdown scenarios that are coming out).

It's true that the top tier squads are more limited, many locations have gone the route of scheduling events that are not always top tier. Once a month for the cut-throat squads to stay sharp, and then other events that are themed might help. Lots of people like the top tier all the time, but if that is a problem you've encountered, try the other variations. Some are one unique only, melee only, using only certain sets, etc. There have been lots of thread floating around here and on WotC boards I know I've read.

If you want to start organizing and have a DCI number, check out this page: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dci/welcome or go to www.thedci.com and it will redirect you. Select the link for Tournament Organizer Information and you'll see info how to sign up for the WPN (Wizards Play Network) and advise to get started. There is also a link from the main page for Judges and Rules Advisors.

Just because you hear of people selling their minis doesn't mean the game is losing steam. In any business situation, you must realize the more people that get into the game, the more people that are going to turn over.

That does not mean there are fewer and fewer players that just means the game has reached a point that there are so many players that even when you hear of multiple players quitting, the net difference of players playing may actually be more.

As much as I would like to agree with you I simply can't.

SWM is for all intents and purposes dying, (anyone notice there isn't a set listed after Masters of the Force anywhere in the Wizards catalog, online, or even a rumor? There is a reason.) it doesn't have the numbers compared to juggernauts like Magic or DnD and with only 6300 registered DCI players, even if the number was 10 times that of people who play the game and buy the minis, that isn't much of a market share.

Plus WotC's utter lack of maintenance on the line (besides Dean's sweat-laden work) is also a major sign IMO.

I don't want to see Minis go, but I believe it is an eventuality.

This is the nature of youth. Their interests wax and wane. It's been true of SWM all along that people are leaving. Many are replaced by new people joining, but posts saying "I'm getting out of the game!" have been a constant for years. Every set has been someone's last (and someone else's first.)

Well I dont think that there being nothing listed after Masters is the end of it all necessarily.

We have had breaks before in the game. We have had periods of silence before. we kind of got spoiled with Sarah around talking to us all the time. I think pronouncing that the game is dying do as much to kill it as anything else. Without proof of it's death it is just conjecture.

I find it weird to think it is all doom and gloom with a new set coming out in 2 weeks.

People come and go from this game. That is why goofballs like Nickname, Bill, Deri, Aaron and myself get our names thrown around. We have just been here practically the whole time. We are nerds with nothing better to do.... LOL!!!!

Kevin what area of the country are you in????

Give us some info and let us see what we can do to help. Whether it mean sending you some starters to demo and give away or what. There is a lot that can be done just give us an idea of where you are and what we are up against.

IMHO I think the rules and the concept of the the game, characters, maps ect. are great. It's just that I feel that there are alot of other games that have alot more support. I mean common I dont think there are any SWM players out there that dont think they're game is 2nd rate or "bottom of the barrel" Wizards puts alot more time and effort into it's other games(if you dont believe that go check out some of the other games) Then I think all these pointless arguments are contributing to this "Dark Time"(imagine that!)
I do hope that it will get better, I will keep playing for fun, but am staying away from my LGS(I share the same one as KevinR, the manager is a really big jerk, and I have also been ripped of by him on multipule accounts.)

Bah! You guys are mostly newbs from like RotS/Universe era. LOL Now Dennis and Eric/Engineer go all the way back. Maybe Deri, but he's generally so quiet I can't recall exactly when he arrived.
