The Celestial Warrior wrote:I know that my wife expects our daughters to be red-head (I'm Irish and it runs in her family), so she has always wanted the name Mara knowing where it comes from. We've had 3 boys, lol, and her brothers are nerdy enough that we're surprised that none of our nephews are named Anakin, though I believe it is the middle name of one.
We then named our first son Gavin, which I jokingly told her was an obscure Star Wars name, Gavin Darklighter. Really, we chose it because I like to reference back to Celtic/Gaelic names etc.
Our second son, she found a Welsh(my grandmother's heritage)/Old English name "Caed" meaning "warrior", but we figured with today's Mulim-centric world that it would be mispronounced to Kai-eed, so we swapped the last two letters and made "Cade".
By child 3, it's become a running joke. He is simply Kol. We at least try to find names that sound real even if it's an alternate spelling.
Our daughter was adopted so that one doesn't count :D as we gave her a nickname while she was in foster care with us to cover up the ridiculous name she did have.
I'm not sure what we will do with a 4th boy.
DANGERMOUSE!!!! ok no. but seriously. how cool would it be.
I am liking this discussion! didnt really think it would take off so much! although come to think of it, with the original trilogy coming out like 50 years ago, i am surprised to not find more people called names from the movies. And surprised that nobody i know hasn't used a star wars name! but it is awesome to see there are people who share my
ideas :D and I suppose it always takes a special wifey to marry a star wars finatic in the first place huh guys?? so why cant they go one step more awesome and call their child something cool too? :P
ones i didnt mention before, and these make me laugh, even though its not nice to laugh at peoples names...
DCVS. so, my friend Mike Moore Smuggler, was telling me about his friend who is a teacher in Palmerston North (which is one of those towns where if you're from there, everyone expects less of you) and she met a kid called DCVS. spelt in all caps, and just that. DCVS. its pronounced dee-see-vee-us. I find that bizarre!!
I also think that something in another language (like elvish in tolkiens books, or the Old Tongue) could be quite cool, because it comes with a meaning :) say, Lanfear. which means, Daughter of the Night in Old Tongue. obviously that wont happen because Lanfear probably isnt the nicest name, and also it means daughter of the night. not the most comforting.
is anyone a fan of melding names? I am not, but people are entitled to their own ideas. I know a couple who are called Madison and hayden, so they named their child Madden.
