But Kaan also destroyed himself (and from the books description, pretty painfully destroyed himself) in the process of using (Bane's) thought bomb.
So really, Kaan was just a tool. A war tool, but a tool nonetheless.
And honestly...if I were Hoth...I wouldn't have gone IN, I would've left planetside, and waited in orbit...
"So you wanna blow us all up, huh? Have fun with that, I'll be outside waiting"
Especially since Kaan was SO deep in concentration, he never would've known that Hoth had left the planet.
