But by far the best DCI/Serious competition would be the LGS you speak of Kevin

luke hates thrawn wrote:But by far the best DCI/Serious competition would be the LGS you speak of Kevin The competition wasn't the problem at all. The players were mostly good and easy to get along with. There are a number of problems with the location and the management. I really don't want to drag anyone through the mud like I said but we made some references to issues earlier. My kids are mostly just losing interest in the game, but I had decided months ago after I won the Galaxy at War tourney and was treated wrongly that I wouldn't be back. And it may be DCI in name but none of the games over the past 7 months or so were entered into our DCI stats, even though I've asked repeatedly why? We have the DCI member # and what not all set up in the system. That's just one small issue, the bigger problem by far is the amount of space (extremely cramped), that our events are backseat to the other stuff the store is doing, and they're always running some other gaming tournaments where the players are using language that is NOT family friendly (dropping F-bombs and taking the Lord's name in vain like it's going out of style). Not something I want my kids around, not now not ever. I had to speak up to some of those characters practically every time we played in a tourney there and the management hardly ever did. "Hey we got kids over here guys". And changing up how they award the winner prizes AFTER a tourney is complete and depending on who won the tourney is just wrong. If I were the only person that has noticed this I'd just be quiet and keep my family home, but it wasn't just me. So I've got 3 options essentially: A. Quit Star Wars mini's altogether. B. Just play at home or online or with friends when and if I have the time for a game. C. Find another venue to host tournaments for us and see about getting the necessary certification to run the tournaments and make sure they get run rightly and fairly.

I really don't want to use names or drag anyone through the mud so I won't say much more about it other than we're just looking for a new venue and I have a few locations that are willing to host but I'll need other players. I am pretty confident we'll have them, I just wanted to see what everyone's feeling was as to if the game is dying or not. I know that there are some groups, but they meet up around Broad Ripple, Carmel, Avon, So basically NORTH. Greenwood has/had a large group since the LGS you are speaking of WAS more friendly to let us have free dci tournaments and provide prize support (heck they even bought and sold singles). People are everywhere around here, but it takes some time to find them. There are other places that would gladly host the tourneys for free and have better atmospheres and more room. Just hosting a tournament for free is not that big of a deal, it's bringing tons of business and potential business into their store.

I heard about the GaW tournament and the prize support is nothing like it was. (but at least we get it) and the Manager claims that the DCI data is entered right but sometimes we get it and sometimes we don't (I would like to have that string of 2nd place finishes on my record ) Gamerz from what I understand isn't the most Pro-SWM place on earth but if you could get the word out to some of the guys than they would come. Randy's only place to play is the GP and he wouldn't mind playing most likely, and if you get Randy you might get Joruus

Aye, I think in my area Star Wars mins is more of a backwater hobby that rarely gets any coverage whatsoever. The most I can expect is a single tourney and a SWM preview event once every 3 months and causally at my youth club once a week. Make matters worse that place is 2 hours away from home on foot and train, making it impossible to attend regluarly.
I try, but eventrally I have to let another game such as Yu-Gi-Oh with a much huger fanbase take control, simply because theres only 4 gamers here that are interested in the game with their own figures. Another four use combinations of our figures for games, but the majority of friends I know only play Yu-Gi-Oh and won't give it a serious look into.
But really, the game is not dying, it sells well enough and I am pretty sure there are a number of people out there, just the events are crap, such to the extent that for most of the year it's just isolated groups waiting for something to actually happen.

Seems I'm lucky; our LGS hosts actual DCI tournaments every Saturday, and puts up 8-12 players regularly, with solid prize support. In walking distance, too.

I don't think the game is losing steam just yet......At my LGS we have had five new people get into the game in the last two weeks. And they are very interested in collecting and getting better as players. Our store has really grown with our weekly tourny's. We are drawing at least eight every week and some weeks we have twelve to fifteen. A year ago, we were lucky to get four. I think there is still a ton of interest in the game and people have to be willing to help others grow there collection and knowledge to keep the interest up!!

Agreed, I was thinking about getting you and Garrett over here(maybe chris if he wants to) for a DarkTimes booster tourny(We could buy the packs from mini market sence they're cheaper) PM and we could talk about the details.

I live in the backend of forever, and there's only really me and one or two mates who play regularly, but we still enjoy, and our little group isn't really slowing too badly...

I know alot of people are worried the game will end after Masters but I'm hoping it keeps going for sure. There is a huge layover between Masters and a possible fall set but hopefully it is filled with a few battle packs. I love to see those. Some huge pieces again would be nice. There are limitless possibilities for more figs with the cartoon, movies upcoming games and the tv live action show. I guess it all depends on their profits. In this economy at least this is a fairly cheap hobby for alot of people.
Our LGS does better in the summer than during the school year. We have quite a few kids that play. A normal night in the summer is around 15-20. Right now I think it is more like 8-12. We've had some tourneys when the Owensboro group comes out that goes well over 20. Likewise, I've been to a couple at their LGS that push 30.

Mickey wrote: In this economy at least this is a fairly cheap hobby for alot of people Very true, myself I used to get into online gaming, First person shooters, the constant upgrading of your desktop PC to keep up with game requirements and buying new games just got way too expensive. That was about the time I found SWmini's and that was all she wrote. I don't think SWminis will die out anytime soon, but even if it does we have such a huge community, there are plenty of us out here that will keep it going well after Wotc stops making them. Heck all those guys making customs, we'd still have mini's we'd just be paying someone else to make'em.

While I have scene some drop off at our local scene, I would atribute it more to a bad local economy than lack of interest in the game. There are a lot of other factors to take into consideration regarding the constant ups and downs of SWM. I don't think the end is here just yet. In my personal situation 2 sets this year would actually be a blessing, however I realize to some it would be a slap in the face. My gut tells me we are in for a hiatus, while Peter Lee gets ramped up for new sets. Peter does a lot around Wotc, so I am sure he is not going to get to dedicate as much time as Rob did when he was the lead designer and less sets per year could be our future.
I also play War at Sea, which is the Naval version of Axis & Allies Miniatures. It is also produced by Wotc, and designed by a really nice guy named Rich Baker. He is in a similiar boat as Peter Lee, as he is over a lot of things and WAS is kinda a side project. We get an expansion per year, and they are always delayed by months at a time. It would not surprise we to see SWM go to something similiar with perhaps 2 sets a year instead. But who knows for sure. I would just enjoy the ride while it lasts, and be thankful for each new set/expansion that we get. Who knows for sure when the ride will eventually end, and like all things in life, eventually it will.

You know, I wouldn't be surprised if WOTC slows SWM down a bit, like War at Sea. Less staff, less time to make stuff.

And how soon can I move there? Haha just kidding but that is awesome. We have no support at all in the Edmonton, Alberta area but I do have a core gaming group of 8 players that gets together in fort mcmurray, Alberta monthly. But not a thing official

For the Indy guys....I know it's not super close, but remember that we have a pretty regular play-group here in Cincy, so, only 1.5-2 hours away from you. We play every week (barring lousy weather) at 7:30 on Thursdays. If you guys decided you wanted to come down some Thursday evening, you could crash at my place and then drive back on Friday morning.
We used to do Release Tournaments for new sets on Saturdays, but have gotten away from that recently for economy reasons and such. If we go back to doing that, we'll be sure to let he forums know, so anybody can come if they want to.
Also, we hosted one of the Regionals in June last year, and I hope we'll be able to do that again this coming year, and perhaps expand it to more of a weekend event with some Friday night gaming and stuff too.

WOTC is the only one who has a collectible Miniature Game on market, why should they cancel it ??
