People who are interested ought to get in contact with the folks at starwarsccg.org. They have been operating that game for more than a decade now, including creating new cards, with permission (and restrictions) from Lucasarts. The Star Trek CCG has been doing the same thing. They have been releasing new cards (which they call virtual cards -- you print out a slip of paper and put it in the sleeve to cover the original text) for longer than the original game was printed -- and for longer than SWM has been around, period.
I would not count on anyone else to save the game. We need to plan on doing it ourselves. There will be about 900 individual pieces when they stop making new ones. That is probably enough of a base to work with and create virtual sets every so often (same mini, new card). Of course the kicker is that Wizards AND Lucasarts would have to sign off on it. Not sure how likely that is to happen.

Aside from the actual physical production of new figures, there really isn't anything else that the player community can't probably do better.
As far as getting new players into the game, that will be harder to do without a product on the store shelves. Vassal is a very cool thing, but I prefer to actually sit at a table and play with people face to face.

It's the end of the world as I know it :(. People are going to have to start using custom stats for things like they did with SWCCG because otherwise the game will stagnate to where there will be no new GenCon squads because there are no new pieces. I am a little disheartend, but I guess my end goal now will be to finish my collection, excluding DT 24 more to go. I guess my father will be uberly happy, no more "you spend too much money" speeches lol.

You can find our custom cards here: DARK SIDE's Custom Minis Thread

Now I know what Vader was complaining about at the end of Revenge of the Sith. Man this is depressing, I appreciate the upbeat support and good ideas people have and will have to look at them after I finish mourning this news.

you got that right! as far as product... from what the Distributors are saying- WOTC is pumping out warehoused product 2 for 1... I seriously doubt there will be any shortage of figs for quite some time as long as people are collecting, modding or playing RPG's regardless of who makes the sytem figs will be in demand!

Yep, should be plenty of produce for quite a while. It's in a sense, a very exciting time as there is a lot we can do. The first steps are making Regionals and Gencon spectacular.

:( I just got into it- went from 0 minis to 600 in 3 months. Not sure what to say...the same thing happened when I got into deciphers ccg. The whole "print some cut out to place it over your card thing" just was not the same...I hope someone does pick this up!

IMO, even in the absence of "official" custom stats, just regularly changing the game format used in tournaments (e.g. different point levels, build restrictions, etc.) can help prevent stagnation. This game just has so many play options that stagnation should be easily avoided.

We will need some kind of change (I know we have the new DCI Updates and all, but right now, we need more), because with what we have going on right now with Axe dropping, we will need new air.

And if you listen to the SWMiniverse podcast (check out the forum here on BlooMilk) you're getting 4-5 ideas every month.

This is like breaking up with a good girlfriend, it all you to take it. there will be virtual sets, there will be tourney's, and there will be those knock down drag outs that you only lose because you lost a few Int. or win because you roll a few lucky crits. Who knows maybe even though the old girlfriend was really awesome the new one will be even better. Don't get down there will be something that will either replace SWM or re kindle the reason you like o maybe even love this game. BTW if you need a Vader LOTF i have one for trade and it is still fun to group him with tarkin and some other commanders (TWBSV) that need those extra attacks, and open up a can of whoop ass on someone.
