There seems to be many incarnations of Vader; which one is usually used? Or do different squads require different Vaders?

Thanks!

It tends to vary, depending on what squad he's in, as well as what squads you think you'll be facing.

Is there a certain guideline as to which vader is used for what purpose?

Pardon my silly question, still kinda new :P

I prfer Lord Vader, I think is the most balanced of the Vaders, he is a asskicker and a good commander, I know that are more powerful minis, and better commanders, but balanced only this, greettings.

Legacy Vader and Unleashed Vader are great depending on the application.

Vader Scourge can be a beast as well against the right opponents.

They are highly specialized. It really depends on how you want to use him. Jedi Hunter is still the best general beatstick imo, but Lord Vader or Legacy are the more all around.

A lot of them are so specialised that they only show up in certain squads (ie. Darth Vader, Imperial Commander). Out of the generic combat ones, I actually prefer Scourge of the Jedi. Relatively cheap, fairly tough, can dish out serious hurt, and gives me enough points to squeeze in a second combat character.

Check the ratings. There are several that are highly rated. Only one or two truly are bad. With a relatively small collection, I'll use the Vader I have. :-)

I would say just use Jedi Hunter, Imperial Commander, Unleashed, Legacy, and Lord Vader.

A quick run down of the key Vaders:

Anakin, Sith Apprentic: Cheapist Vader, and retains a lot of his value, especially with the right support.

Jedi Hunter: best balance of defense and offens.

Champion of the Sith: a commander, best used with Palpatine or force users.

Lord: Very offensive, little defense, and a helpful CE.

Imperial Commander: Only with troopers.

Unleashed: the "ranged" Vader. Best with a force battery and do not want to get upclose.

Scourge: Anti-melee

Legacy: A good mix. Decent offense, decent defense, and very helpful CE.

Legacy Vader is my favorite.

I like Imperial Commander Vader too, he's great for buffing the Troopers, just be sure to add the Felucian Commander so you can have Troopers with 30 Defense in cover... not bad.

Vader Uleashed is the best peace in my opinion, he is very flexible.
But Vader, LotF; Jedi Hunter and Lord Vader are great peaces too in the right Squad.

It's just a matter of opinion and preference.
Try 'em out and see which one you like.

I like Lord Vader for the sheer offensive power.

Here's a real world application for this: I'm trying to slim down my collection. I'm getting RS Palpatine but probably not Palps on Swivel Chair. I'd like to do a squad with Vader and the emperor in 150 (I know that's kinda stupid) so that means Scourge or Unleashed. My gut instinct is Scourge, as he's more melee while Palpatine is there to zap people with lightning and loan out the occasional force point.

Which would you guys pick and why?

Scourge will be definitely cheaper (as he's only a rare), but Unleashed is better all around (not quite as good as scourge only when it comes to melee jedi).

However, if you have Thrawn (opp), then Scourge is awesome with throw 2 and djem-so.

I have to say, echoing some early remarks, it all depends. Each one has it's place except for Lord of the Dance who has been suplanted since JH hit the table.

My fav Vaders are the afformentioned Jedi Hunter (a great beatstick), Unleashed (awesome grip and throw always make appointents use caution) and before the advent of the Swarm killers of Yobuck and the Lancer IC vader was a personal Fav of mine as well.

But for Vader to work the squad needs to support him, and he needs to help them too. And each one has a place somewhere in the imperial forces
