What are the thoughts about Jedis around the boards? When our group of players get together a lot of us like to play Jedis the only problem is they get all shot up before they can really get into the frey. We have thrown around a bunch of ideas I was just wondering if other players have the same feelings that we do. Which is if you play a team of Jedis you should be able to do ok the only problem is they dont.

There's one strategy I find that works quite well: Stay out of the line of fire.

A melee character can easily use walls and other terrain to their advantage to prevent being shot at before they close the gap.

I do releize that but sometimes that is not an option also their is the issue of characters that are non-melee can get other figs to combine fire when adjacent to jedis but melee jedi cannot gain that benifit

build with enough low cost pieces to run an effective grunt screen if your opponent doesnt have any accurate shot. if they do have accurate shot, just hope your low cost grunts are useful in other ways. ugs, and mice are usually the best choices.

Well staying out of the line of fire is nice. Use an uggie to shield yourself. Make your saves. Use a commander effect like swap or lukes levitate ability to get around or tow with r2.

To get that extra boost there are plenty of commander effects to help melee from admiral ackbar, malak, thrawn even Extra attacks from vader, exile, kryat, and flobi. Jedi even have the power to reroll the dice most shooters cant do that.

It really gets me going when people refuse to play melee cause they will "get shot up before they can do anything" Thats a common complaint. Learn your maps thats point #1 if you know where you cant get shot you have a real advantage. Learn the meta thats around you. If you play against droid a lot try using a melee team of Kyle JBM, Kol, and Leia. THey can make all of their saves via Wedge/Leia and when they get there kyles disruptive will eat away at all of those CE's.

Bottom line melee is fine and VERY powerfull but i see your point about how it can be tough. I'd say just read some of Billiv15's how to play guides on gamers. They will help you out a lot.

Dont get me wrong I love my jedis and I always try to keep them from getting shot up, I play this universe for these cool jedis and if i want to field a team of jedis and I'm facing a seps team it isnt pretty. BTW I never expect any team to win all the time but a team of jedis should win from time to time. I just wanna have fun!!

That really isn't much of an issue as most jedi have double digit attack ratings, so they generally don't need help to hit.

Also again, by forcing the opponent to come to you, or taking the side routes, you limit how many enemies can see you and thus also limit how many characters can be used to combine fire on you.

Quite fortunately, this problem is quickly becoming irrelevent.

The two major Jedi factions are each getting their own counters to shooters: Republic is getting some amazing movement breakers like Yoda on Kybuck, Captain Panaka, R2 Astromech, The Dark Woman, General Skywalker, etc. and the New Republic has Evade, which makes shooters less effective unless their in the Jedi's attack range.

Also, the upcoming restrictions on maps will make it harder for shooters to use distance to their advantage.

word of advice:
don't bring a knife(lightsaber) to a gunfight

SWM jedis don't have the abilities as those on screenAngry

choose jedi that have a great CE or a long range attack of some kindSmile

and of course, keep them out the front linesBlushing

if you charge your jedis into the fray, they'll just be killedCursing

For most part, I dislike using Jedi or melee charcters without Twin attack, as they simply take too much effort to march across the board, only to do 20 damage and be shot. Chances are the none-melee attackers will then either let rip at close range, where they often can't avoid the fire, before stepping away and taking a single attack of opptunity. Melee to none melee combat is high risk for little reward unless played very well, while shooting squads only have to really fear better shooting squads. by the time the melee charcter lumbers up to them, they will still have the uggies to match in the way.

It is getting better now though, as mentioned, the Republic have swap, new Repubilic have mass evade and often greater mobile attack. Even the Sith are interesting in the fact that many of their none unqiues are not restricted to melee combat. A few force points can be spent for instant damage within a force lightning or lightsaber throw. O.R have the resistant Jedi Weapon Master for low point games. Just, I don't have the pacience for Melee figures unless they have something good to bring the party, be it huge damage potencial damage output when they get there, surviablity or a good commander effect. Otherwise, I am wasting time when I finally do base that shooter. XD

Generally speaking, I love flexable units, and I love Jedi that do their job well and have twin/huge surviablity. Though generally I will use Melee charcters because most shooters are generally the bottom end stats wise anyways.

Stealth and Force cloak help. Only a few Jedi figs have those abilities, so you are limited. But I loves me some Shaak Ti, JM!

There are many ways around that problem. As pointed by some earlier, know your map. It's also not such a good idea to run a pure melee squad. Theoretically it would be powerful but, depending on where you play, you'd probably run into squads that have super-shooters.

Override helps, but the best thing to do is to have an adaptable squad. But if you must, use Jedi that have deflect or can be granted evade. That works well enough.

Jedis always could reflect and/or redirect shots in the movies and cartoons. I have thought it would be cool to give Jedis the ability to be able to redirect shots back at the attackers that missed only by a few, for example, needing a 12 to hit, and rolling a 9... putting it in that miss range of say... 3-5, which would allow the Jedis to redirect that attack and damage back to the attacker. Not all that big of a deal, but it would cause a lot of the range attacks to be considered more before being attempted. It could even be limited to only non-unique shooters. Or even further with it being against unique Jedi.

Im thinking that with alot of the new character costs within the last couple of sets, we will be seeing more force users with reflect, at a cheap"ish" cost.
Vader LoTF (though quite expensive) is a good example as to how reflect should be used.

The poor guys at the end of this IMO are the Sith. Many of their top pieces are melee (although some have a 6 square ranged attack) and the faction doesn't have too many shooters, unless you start bringing in Fringe. No funny movement stuff either (no swaps, I can't recall anyone with more than normal speed, etc). And to top it all off, some of them have no form of defense against shooting unlike the Jedi....
