hi!

well, wondering what you guys think about the 40 point sets. personally, i dont like them. why? BC it takes all the "collecting" out of SWM. sure, you dont know what VR you get, but other than that you're (99% sure) getting every other R, 2x of every other UC, and x4 of every C. Whereas, for RS-KOTOR, you get randomized VR, R, UC, and C...much harder (and IMO more interesting) to collect. also, you have much more pride in saying "i collected (insert 60 fig set)!" . its no feat now to collect a completet 40 set.

plus, the prices of all minis in general (with a select few) go down...now all VR are worth 10-20 MAX (again, except a select few)

what do you think?

thx yall in advance!!! :)

As a casual collector, I get a lot more now than in the past, whether that be by buying individual boosters or singles. I feel like a get more for my money. You are right in that it is not a feat to collect a complete 40 set or even just get the figures you want, which is why I like it. Previously, getting the figures I wanted was just too much money and/or work. Single pieces cost too much and single booster purchases always felt like too much of a risk since I wasn't interested in so many of the R's or VR's. It seems like there are fewer "junk" R's and VR's now since there are fewer figures. I've never been a case buyer, though, so I can see how a case buyer would prefer the older 60 fig sets, but I think the 40 fig sets are more accessible and less intimidating to newer or casual players.

Funny, I actually like the 40 piece set for exactly the reasons you dislike them. If I buy a case I know what I'll need to track down later and don't need to worry about gettig screwed with the mix of commons/uncommons. When it comes to "pride" by being able to say "I collected the entire 60 piece set," I say whoopie because I imagine there are very few who actually care if you managed to collect everything.

As for the price of minis going down I fail to see why that is a bad thing. Nobody should be stupid and buy minis to get rich selling them (sorry to any major resellers) and lower prices should make he game more accessable to new players which are needed.

lower prices = venues getting less money
venues getting less money = less support for the game
less support for the game = game dies.

thats why.

why would anyone buy a booster pack now when you can get a case and only need 4 figs to complete the set? you spend $109 for the case then track down the rest either buy trade or buying singles. The LGS makes money by people buying boosters and paying money to the store. If no one does that the game withers away and dies.

40 piece sets are both good and bad IMO. I can get the stuff i want but i think in the long run it hurts more than it helps.

Thats just my opinion.

I like the 40 fig sets best.
I like paying the least amount of money as I can for the minis I want, and thats After I buy a case. My LGS can have me buy cases from them all day, but they have to be willing to negotiate. I'm not paying 160$ for a case when I can pay 110$ at miniaturemarket. The Market of minis has survived this long by those standards, so I'm not going to worry if my LGS can't sell ALL of his boosters. Hes been in business for 23 years, he'll be O.K

i love how i can get all the Rs in 1 case. i remember when i got 2 kotor cases and then got several repeat Rs.

Edit:though i will say that i miss the old style booster packs, old style cards and the set list/FAQ in each pack

The thing about the lower prices, with the economy the way it is, are key to keeping more people playing/collecting. Also, I would argue that the majority of SWM players/collecters buy boosters. I know the majority of the kids in my groups do.

I don't see our LGS making less money on the 40 piece sets. More people are buying cases because they know they will only need to find 4 more pieces to complete the set. Also when we have an event all entry fees go towards buying prize support from the store. That didn't change from 60 piece sets to 40 so no money is lost there at all. Our turnouts have been steady and in fact we added another venue in another town so we could play on weekends as well. I really don't understand why people want to make it hard on themselves to complete a set. If you have that much money you want to throw away there is a little place that needs some help called Haiti.

.

this seems to me to be almost completly opposite of our experience

I don't have to buy 2 cases, therefor I have more money to spend at the local Venue
Venue gets more money and players playing= more support for the gamer
more support for the gamer more= game time and better players

Lower prices leads to people being able to buy more of the product.
Being able to buy more of the product leads to more support.
More support leads to the game staying alive.

It's a supply and demand issue, though with the recent game announcement, I suppose it didn't quite work out that way. The question is if the 40-piece sets had anything to do with it.

Sure it was. We either get 6-40 piece sets or probably nothing at all. Wizos was not going to keep doing 60 piece sets. So overall, I'm glad the game continued onward from KotOR.

I'm guessing if they couldn't agree to slice the set size down, they probably didn't want to go forward with more 60 piece sets. The game would have stopped there (as far as new releases go).

40 piece sets were used to lower sales and kill the game. Are you kidding?

We were told that they dropped to 40 piece sets because of oil prices.

Then they continued to produce the same 120 minis per year.

The difference was that suddenly instead of buying 4 cases to complete a set I bought one. So sales drop off a bit. Well with a licensing agreement a small drop in sales is just enough.

Not to mention instead of paying an artist for their booster are for 2 sets you are paying for 3. That costs more.

Production runs:

3 verus 2 do the math again more expensive.

Marketing:

3 sets versus 2..... again more expensive.

It is not hard to see that 40 piece sets were not a huge help to the life of the game.

There is no way it made profits go up and if they go down we get discontinued like we just did.

They clearly weren't making a profit with the 60 piece sets. Hence why we had the switch to 40 and the online release of the rules insert/checklist. I would imagine those 60 piece sets were big undertakings. It has to be easier to spread out the release of miniatures in a few sets.

Pieces are too easy to collect with 40, and they aren't to healthy for trading, considering most of the pieces aren't worth more then two bucks. Which brings the problem of people not wanting to buy as many packs
