Whats a good way to build up a set that others will want to trade with that does not cost a lot of money?

If you are just starting out I'd say there are two ways to go. It depends if you want to collect everything or just want to play to a particular faction or two. If you want to eventually collect everything I'd hit ebay or try to find someone selling their entire collection. These tend to go for alot less than they would individually. If you want to just pick a faction to build on I'd hit one of the dealers online such as miniaturemarket.com and start buying singles.

Well the really easy, really cheap way is to find all the figures that the online stores have hundreds of, ala nikto soilders and other junk fig's like that and stock up on them.
It wont help you iwn tournies, but you can say you have alot of figs.

SOrry, had to joke.

Right now you cna get some great deals on ebay for figs. I've seen Grevious DAC going for less than 15 dollars the past few days. So even soem of hte highly sought after pieces are becoming available at an inexpensive price right now.

Best, cheapest way to build up a decent collection... buy a collection and then trade away the VRs. Money-wise, there are few VRs that are worth the money in terms of gameplay. Only ones that are worth it are the "key" pieces for each faction... e.g. GGDAC, Rieekan. But the vast majority of VRs, while good, are not as good as what you can get in terms of rares via trade. People are looking for VRs to fill holes in their collections and will give a lot more (money-wise) in terms of rares for VRs. So if you get someone's collection off ebay, and then trade away an unplayable VR for 3-5 playable rares, you'll build up a playable collection relatively cheaply. Of course, trading away the VRs for Rares means you have less trade bait for later.

Coolstuffinc has deals for pretty much every set where you can buy the whole Common list for a set & the Uc list for a set, basically 1 of each & its pretty cheap, then picking up the R's & Vr's is another story but you can find them cheap enough if you look around on the internet...

If you intend to collect complete sets of each expansion, then buying either full sets on Ebay or buying Cases are the best ways to go. Especially for the 40 piece sets, if you buy one case, then you have all but 4 pieces, and typically enough extras of the Cs/UCs, that you shouldn't need to buy many more of those.

The older 60 piece sets don't work quite as well that way, but it's still best to buy at least one case, to nab all the C/UC, and then pick up the other R/VR individually or on Ebay or something.

It's easy, you buy one case of Legacy of the force. That gives you good pieces for 5 factions. Trade what you don't want.
Empire- Fels and troopers
Rebel- Dodonna, Luke
Sith- oh heck yeah
Fringe- Cade Skywalker anyone?
New Rep- Tons of them
Mando's a plenty
Old rep= one piece, but heck she's awesome.
Even some great VOng pieces in there

I liked Legacy of the Force, had a little something for everybody as Darth Reeves says. It's a good set all around.

My thought is building a set that others want to trade with is pointless. You should build your collection for YOU and not just to trade although trading can be a means to get the collection you want. The question you should ask is why type(s) of collector are you: completionist (needs one of everything), skirmisher (plays the mini game), RPGer, or just decorative? There are subcategories for each but each of those calls for a slightly different approach which trading can help with.

I just started collecting about 2 months ago and i'm about 60% complete. I suggest buying cases, the newer cases you can use as trade bait with folks who don't have em yet. i also was able to purchase a lot of the figs I wanted to play immediately and fill the rest in. I check about 5/6 sites whenever i make a purchase. but i've come across some great deals with folks via trades.
