Sovereign Protectors were Royal Guards. Just a more elite branch.

Far fewer were able to be Sovereign Protectors.

so why weren't the elite guards assigned to palpatine, seeing as you don't see any double edged blades in the movies? palps trusted his regular guards over his elite?

Why should the Emperor need is very best guards when he is arguably in one of the most secure locations in all the Empire? If we equate the US President to the Emperor I imagine the SS guard right outside the Oval Office is very skill but the elites are probably working on stopping threats from ever materializing or preparing for actual high risk details. If we ever say Palpatine walking the streets of Imperial Center we'd have probably seen his Sovereign Protectors.

I believe Sovereign Protectors were assigned to citadels and palaces on Byss and elsewhere in the galaxy. A quick check on Wookieepedia will answer all of your questions. Also, I don't think these guys came into "existence" until the Dark Empire comics came out, so that also explains why we don't really see them over Royal Guards in other formats.

They did not exist at the time of the orignal tri, the royal guards were the elite most protectors. It pretty much comes down to that and they were invented by EU later on.

That, or it could be assumed that they had other importent roles, like safeguarding privet forts and so fourth.

Whatever their originations may be,m they are two very handy figs in the game, while capable of filling similar roles, there is enough of a point disparage and ability difference for them to work well in concert with each other and not have on obsolte the other as we have seen with many fig's, example the 501 stormtrooper.

One other question why doesn't the shadow guard have Bodyguard? Also if you consider in TFU there was some ESP there as well and they were nasty, so it's cool to see some more TFU stuff, although the Crimson Empire background helps too. Too bad Kir didn't have a crazy cool CE for Royal guards. I remeber the TLT one we made over onteh WOTC board gave them all dark armor.

How do you know that the Guards seen in ROTS and ROTJ WEREN'T Sovereign Protectors?? LOL

Seriously though, the term 'Royal Guard' and 'Imperial Sovereign Protector' are really synonymous. They were the same things. The ones we see in the films just have Force Pikes for weapons instead of the glaives seen in the comics.

Agreed love to see all the Force Unleashed pieces (rodians, Kota's troops, ISPs, and 501sts even though they technically weren't in the game they sure look like they fit.

I'm in agreement with this. Who is to say they weren't packin' some double edged blades under their robes? There was just never a need for them to do anything in the films.

I like to think that Palpatine's last thought was 'crap, why did I tell the guards to leave?!'
