You should have Virtual Sets 8 - perhaps Echo's Dropbox does not have the 8.0 extension. Grab the "virtual sets.mdx" from the alternate link (to my file share) I posted - that one includes v-set 8. Overwrite the older file with it.
Here's a quick and dirty method for the whole process: (Windows)
note: I just went through this a few minutes ago
1) install latest Vassal, using the custom install option and remove all existing versions, leave everything else as is
2) put the .vmod and virtual sets.mdx files in some personal folder of your choosing (can be a folder on the desktop if you want) - DON'T PUT THEM IN THE VASSAL FOLDER, save them where they are easy to find and keep track of so you can copy newer versions over them.
3) launch Vassal, then click File > Open Module (locate the .vmod you downloaded, open)
4) when you see the module listed in the Vassal program, right-click on it > Add Extension (locate the .mdx file, open) -Vassal automatically created a subfolder called SWMinis_ext in the folder I had made and moved the extension into it
I also had a dialog box that said 'tiling images' that seemed to hang on Desert Outpost - must be a problem with that map image - I clicked cancel to make it go away.
Launch the module - in the SWM Skirmish Game window you should see:
- SWM Skirmish Game version 11.0 - Extension Virtual Sets 8 v8.0 loaded
seems to be functioning properly, though I did not go onto Vassal server

After years of not being on Vassal, I tried to get a game in last night with my son. No go. Can anyone tell me if these instructions are current? I talked to Trevor on the way to the Ohio regional, and he said he'd had trouble getting .pdfs from Matt so he stopped updating it. What I have on my computer I had to create characters from as far back as Vset 5. Surely I'm missing an update.
This and Skype issues are why I was away for years lol.

You are missing an update for sure. The current extension should take you to V-10. One of the issues with Vassal is trying to find all the important files that you need to run it. It would be nice if all the files were in an easy to find location.

This and Skype issues are why I was away for years lol. I don't use Skype, I use Facebook Messenger, and Just use the Voice call system. VERY reliable, and have never had a call dropped using it.

i think i used winRAR. you can download it for free. I couldnt tell you which one I used. Trevor is better at this sort of thing. I suggest giving him a call or message, he can probably walk you through it.

When you open Vassal, select open module from the File drop menu at the top left. Find the vset ext and click open. Should be gtg after that. At least that is how I 'member doing it. Been a while.

Please, someone get the SWM-specific files hosted on Gamers, in .zip format which is built-in compatible in most operating systems these days.
Lol, these issues have been ongoing for years now.
