Does anyone else agree that there aren't enough Vong minis? There are only 22 different kinds in print. Seperatists have around 100, fringe around 300, Vong 22. Wow.

It's true, but they are rather playable. And the v-sets make them even better.

Actually, all of them except Rebel Imperial Seperatists and Republic have too few. They all have less than 50 different minis I think, were seps have 100, fringe 300, imperial republic and rebel around 150Confused. But still, 22 is very little

Though understand that Rebels, Imperials, Republic, and Separatists are designed to be the core factions of the game.

Correct!

But past that the other smaller factions don't have a lot of major characters in them, and also don't have tons of reprints like the other factions. How many vaders, lukes, and Kenobi's do we have?

It could be argued there are plenty of characters in said factions, but not really major ones. Most of them especially the Vong as I recall are introduced and killed in the same book or two. Kinda feels like anybody at WOTC read some of the NJO and then nothing past it. (They did at least seem to keep up with the comic books though)

We have gotten plenty of one shot type characters along the Lines of Dash Rendar or Xizor, but at least they were focused on in a big media event with Shadows of the Empire between comics, toys, cards, video games, and a novel. With the occasional cameo here or there since. So stuff like that makes sense at least, but how many other one shot type characters are so memorable on a large scale?

I agree, and the V-Sets are doing something to counterbalance things, but it takes time. Prior to Renegades & Rebels (and Battle of Theed and the Epic set) there are 850 distinct characters (I'm not counting reprints, because it really doesn't matter if the Imperials have one or fifteen different-looking versions of the Stormtrooper).

Of those 850, the Fringe take up the largest slice by far: 250 pieces (almost 30%).

Once you take the Fringe out, the number functionally goes up by 20 thanks to Affinity. So, of the pool of 620 non-Fringe pieces (including the "doubles" created by Affinity):

Republic = 150 (24.19%)
Rebels = 116 (18.71%)
Imperials = 106 (17.10%)
Separatists = 74 (11.94%)
New Republic = 43 (6.94%)
Sith = 43 (6.94%)
Old Republic = 39 (6.29%)
Mandalorians = 28 (4.52%)
Yuuzhan Vong = 21 (3.39%) (the Vong lost a piece if you remove reprints)

When you look at the numbers, the inequalities are obvious, but not surprising. Each of the movie factions accounts for more than 10% of the non-Fringe pieces, although the Seps are in last place by a HUGE margin (the percentage difference between the Seps and the New Rep/Sith is smaller than the difference between the Seps and the Imperials, the next "smallest" faction). It is telling that the "Big Three" are the only ones to have 100+ pieces.

The next "tier" is the New Republic, Sith, and Old Republic, all at around 40 pieces, within striking distance of 50 (after R&R and BoT, I think the New Rep and Sith will both be at 50+ and the Old Rep will be at 48 or 49... not particularly statistically significant).

The Mandos and the Vong are in the worst shape, with the Vong having fewer options (although post R&R, the surface numbers are closer [32 vs 27, although Skirata is a "gateway" to 8 additional pieces for the Mandos... which may not be fair to include, because the Sith and Old Rep also have "gateway" characters, as do the New Rep, Republic, and possibly Rebels... My head hurts!).

Point is, yep, the Mandos and the Vong have gotten the short end of it. Not only do they have fewer options than other factions, but they also have terrible synergy with Fringe pieces (for the most part). Although there are unique pairings (eg, Mandalorian Conscription, Peace Brigade Thug), for the most part, the Mandos and Vong aren't meant to be played with anyone but themselves, limiting their options further.

Still, while the current landscape is somewhat bleak, help is on the way. Although still limited, the Vong and Mandos have far more options--far more PLAYABLE options--than they used to, and more V-Sets are on the way. Consider the path of the Old Republic as an example: When WotC ended their run, the Old Rep had 33 pieces and couldn't field a competitive squad. Two V-Sets later, they have nearly 50 pieces and a number of great options that make them competitive. I don't know how they're doing at GenCon this year, but after R&R, I wouldn't be surprised to see multiple Old Rep squads make it to the finals next year.

So hang on. I think the V-Set designers have enough candy to hand out to everybody.
