How many of you have actually used (or are using currently) your SWMinis in a roleplaying game? I was just curious. I know that one of Wizards' old selling points was that the figures might be used for the RPGs too, but I understand the skirmish players were always the stronger market. A former constant roleplayer, I've definitely kept that use for them in mind, particularly if I ever get around to gamemastering something myself although, as of yet, I've still only really used them in this game. ( I had a brief, shining chance once to use them in a SW RPG years back, but only for one single evening as the campaign fell apart almost immediately... )

My son and I use our SW mini's with the SWM{CE} campaign rules. It's not the full blown SWRPG. However it is a form of role playing using the mini's. It's a lot of fun, my son actually prefers to play with these rules rather than the WotC skirmish rules. Fool keeps the rules updated here at this site he made. http://bswmce1.runboard.com/

We're starting a SWRPG campaign this week and will be using minis for it. My character is a female Togruta scout, so I plan on customizing a Shaak Tii or Ahsoka mini to use. Most of the players in the campaign either are active minis players or used to be, so we have tons of minis between us to use.

I've been running a Star Wars campaign on and off since 2002, and we started using minis after they became available. I've even recently had customs made for the player characters!
Personally, I find minis to be a bit of a double-edged sword, so I don't use them in every fight. Once there's a map on the table and minis on the map, I feel like the playing style becomes a little more tactical (and perhaps uncreative) at times, and that doesn't always match well with the cinematic, "swashbuckling" feel of Star Wars.
Another element is that minis work best in a site-based encounter, but if you look at the movies, the majority of the better sequences are chases/races, covering a number of locales. Something like that is a bit harder to represent with a map and minis.
Still, I definitely use minis a lot of the time (maybe about half?), generally for larger fights that will take place at a single location. Since we've been playing for the better part of a decade, my players are relatively high level and can take on a ton of enemies, so when I'm throwing a large army at them, I will often use minis, if only so they can have the satisfaction of watching their foes dwindle. :)

The only reason I got into minis was because of their use in roleplaying. For a LONG time I'd just buy the commons/uncommons and an occasional low priced rare but would stay way from cases which are the way to go if you're looking for the VRs.
The drawback to minis for RPG is when you don't have "just the right figure" and your players start complaining because of that. Putting down Hutt crimelord when you don't have either version of Jabba is hard for some players to accept when they get addicted to visual decision making.

I also got into SWM when I picked up a few boxes for use in my Saga campaign. Saga measures everything in squares... its basically designed to use a battle mat. I couldn't imagine running the game without them.

The RPG was my gateway drug. One of my players (who was doing GM duty one week) said "Man, it would be cool if we had some stormtoopers for an upcoming battle next week!" - and that was just when the boosters started showing up at half off at Target. I figured what the hell and dropped some cash picking up a random assortment of whatever they had at the time.
And then i found one of the Vader versus Obiwan Starters and figured that I sunk all this cash into the game, I might as well give it a spin. And hey - it was actually pretty fun! But the final blow came as I was doing research on the game, I saw a craigslist listing where some guy was getting rid of a whole bunch of early minis (Rebel Storm and Clone Strike and the like) for 300 bucks. In for a penny, in for a pound and all that!
But yes, I have two shoe-boxes of minis set aside that we use for the RPG - one for SWM and one SSB. We play pretty fast and loose with the D6 rules, so the map is mostly a visual placeholder aid rather than a tactical simulation - but it's still pretty cool.

I've used my minis for an RPG campaign. It worked well for the players I had, and so it added to the experience. It is certainly not necessary, especially if you plan on being less combat focused (I agree that the minis add to the 'ooh, something there; lets shoot it' attitude).
