I have an insanely stupid question to ask but here goes: Usually when I used to play in tournaments 9 before all that ended for minis ) the people I played would always pick the same maps for some reason ( like the Hoth map, shooters were popular although i never saw the virtue of that map) so for many maps i don't know where the gambit zone is. Is there a general rule? Years ago I asked the manager when I first started playing but he said no, for some reason.

The Gambit zone is always the same (the ROTS hardboard is weird). Find the center of the map and count out 4 from there. Count 2 for diagonal then out two more.

The reason the ROTS hardboard is weird is because it's the only map that's a different size. On most maps, the center of the map is a point. On the ROTS map, the center of the map is a square. So counting 4 from a square leads to a much larger gambit area that when you count 4 from a point (with the first movement being diagonal so it counts as 2).

Also, if you need a visual image, the Holocron has pictures of all the WotC maps with the gambit zones highlighted.
