Suppose you wanted to give a box of Star Wars Minis to a friend with 2 pre-set squads and a map. They'll play those squads (using whatever rules you specify - from straight up game with gambit to a specific scenario). That's all they have - your squads and your rules.

What would yield the most fun/challenge/re-playability?

I'd go for Imperials vs Rebels, around 150 points. Maybe the rebels have to take a room on the map that the Imperials are holding?

I actually think Vader Agent of Evil would be a cool figure to build around for the Imperial squad. The possibility of reserves means that the games have more chance of being different each time. Maybe have someone like General Veers or Thrawn as a tech piece, a few starting stormtroopers, and an R7 or two?

And maybe a Rebel team that starts with a few extra activations than the Imperials - maybe something with Luke Rebel Commando, Han Smuggler, Rieekan, Leia, Crix Madine, and some Elite Rebel Commandos. I'd leave out Dodonna, and not include any imperial tempo control either. I think that's potentially a fun game.

I recently did something a little like that for my niece. Ok, it was only one squad with no map and no cards because all she wanted were "some of Uncle Steven's StarWars toys" and she's about six but I the pieces I gave her represented an assortment of different types (Old Republic because that's where my "extra" minis are) yet still make up a 150 point squad.

Now if building a "boxed set" with two squads but looking for versatility I'd go with either 150 or 200 point squads (or some number between as long as the side values are close to each other) with a Rebel/Imperial or Republic/Sep split BUT I may try to put some Fringe units into both squads that could actually be used in either squad. These Fringe units could play with either side and depending on how many there are they could even provide a THIRD team to use in some games. Imagine two 200 point squads that can break down to a 150/150/100 point squad.

If you went with my two teams that can break down into three teams your map and fringe pieces are what could be related. Right now I'm thinking of somewhere like Bespin or Tantoonie where you can have either major group influencing some middle side which could swing the power either way.

If you've been back I redid the BoH squads granted they could be better if I allowed myself more pieces. I also posted a pair of squads for the scenario at the start of RotJ.
