Yo.
Played in a brutal loss last night (kudos Dave) and the question came up about ettiq... ettice... playing proper. Anyhoo, the etty-kit issue was both players having to remind each other about non-optional abilities and not about tactical ones. The rule in question was Vonduun Crab 6 - it says on the card that you "can" make a save and that made it optional, therefore tactical. However, reading the glossary (which I didn't do last night), it says when you take damage you "make" a save - no option.
So then - when it says "can" on the card, does that make it optional? (I imagine that goes for other SA's that mention "can"... help?)

Generally speaking, "can" in this game translates to "has the ability to". "Can" is not optional when an ability is used. Vunduum Crab Armor is triggered whenever you take damage, it is not optional.
