Ok lets say Lumiya is 3 squares away from Mace LotLS and attacks him (melee reach 3) and her attack hits. It is my understanding that Mace is allowed to Riposte that attack. If that is correct and he can Riposte what happens when hid attack hits and defeats Lumiya, causing her to blow up (self-destruct 40)? Does Mace still count as adjacent and take 40 damage? What about other characters? Would they have to be physically adjacent to the square Lumiya is in to take the damage too or can other characters within 3 squares count as well?

Since Lumiya's defeat happens during her attack, Melee Reach 3 is still in effect, thus all characters within 3 are adjacent for Self Destruct.

The Resolving Effects section of the FAQ can help better understand where things start and end.

So in theory you could be bodyguarded from 3 squares away if your attack gets reposted/djem so'd?

That actually happened in the LotF sealed event, Lobostele had Lumiya and it was all down to him and his opponents Tyranus who was 3 squares away. They both ended up killing each other and only Gambit won the game (Lumiya and Tyranus were the only thing left on the board). Very interesting ending to a game.
