I love V-sets. I think the idea of resurrecting old minis is uber, as well as fresh content throughout the year. One thing that bugs me, however, is that instead of using those old rubbish minis (I'm looking at you, Dr. Evazan), people are able to use commons as proxies. I feel that this cheapens the game.

Take Bastila Shan for example. Her WotC version reeked of meh with her Battle Meditation. With the introduction of V-sets, she was resurrected to near-broken status! But no. You can use any old mini as a proxy, leaving her to still collect dust.

I have no issue with recommended minis for Uniques being commons, such as The Revanchist. It's when the recommended mini is a Rare or Very Rare and people just use some random common. There is then no reason to collect old pieces other than to look at, or say that you have them.

I'm totally for V-sets and I'm not here to start a flaming war. I just wish it were possible to make it so that proxies at least had to be the same or higher rarity, even if only for tournament play. There aren't going to be many who agree with me, but let the discussion begin......

It is something for you to discuss with your judge, who has final say on proxies and customs.

I will say, once the game is no longer produced, there is little reason to keep any monetary value to pieces.

I see where you're coming from - it's much easier and more flavoursome to play games when the actual RM is used, so it's clear what's what, especially for uniques.

But the other angle, and one thing I especially like about the v-sets, is that it makes it easier for players to play and access good squads without having to spend much. I have a friend from Church who I've got playing, who's maybe spent NZ $50 to just pick up the basics like Ugnaughts, Mouse Droids, Rodian Brutes, R7s, and a few guys with lightsabers to use as proxies, and he can make a lot of good Sith squads using those and the v-set cards. He's a student, and he's also a keen Warhammer player, so he doesn't have much to spend on the game, but it's good that he can come along and play despite only having a tiny collection. I like community made stuff that doesn't cost too much; it's like the equivalent of Open Source software.

I'm a total fuss-budget too, and don't have any of the chase pieces (Captain Rex is lmy most valuable piece) and I like how I can compete without having to pick up anything super expensive like Boba Fett BH or Cad Bane. I just use Barris Offee Jedi Knight as a proxy for everything, since I really like her sculpt.

I think there are just different perspectives - I'm mainly interested in playing and competing (ie getting ranking points and bagging as many of Kezzamachine's trophies as I can) - I love reading and arguing and thinking about the competitive meta - but I'm only interested in collecting and customising so far as it helps me to have fun playing and competing.

I like the V-sets myself but that doesnt mean I use a Proxy for any mini new or old. Me and my buddies have no use for proxys in the game we consider it cheating. I have Mandalore the Ultimates card but no mini does that mean I should use a ugnaught tech or a gran raider as his proxy that is just WRONG so I dont use him. U should be able to buy most of the pieces you need relatively cheap, true cad bane and darth revan and some of the SR are spendy just dont use em. there are enough pieces out there I just started playing SWM this year I been in it less then 5 months and I managed to scrape together a nice collection off ebay and from TnT and strikezone for under 200$ including pieces like Cade Skywalker, Darth Maul Champ of Sith, Mara Jade Jedi, and about 40 other rares. Proxys should be reserved for UC pieces such as mouse droids and ugnaught demos if at all in my opinion. FYI we don't allow Proxys in Spokane, so if you bring your game here bring your miniatures and cards.ThumbsUp

Thats the reason I customise every single piece... using heroclix, d&d etc, so a unique is still a unique

I feel that all pieces need to easily identifyable

I think we're talking just about v-set proxies, correct? Our house rules are just that pieces need to be identifiable, not that you need the actual Recommended Mini; I really don't think you should have to splash out $50 on a Darth Revan to use Darth Revan Sith Lord, when you can just use a Reborn (which makes sense, since it's the RM for the Revanchist) or a Jensaarai Defender (which I think looks enough like Revan to be obvious). I've never had a game where it hasn't been obvious what's what - if you're not sure, you can just ask. I find keeping track of which minis players have activated much trickier.

But we normally play that you need the actual mini for WOTC pieces; occasionally we let people away with something like multiples of an expensive non-unique, like Storm Commandos.

As stated above... if this game has any hope of growing its community, it needs to be as accessible as possible to new players. While the price of many minis have plummeted over the years since WOTC abandoned it, certain minis are still as expensive (if not more) than ever. It would really scare off potentially new players knowing that the pieces are no longer made, and they have to try and hunt them down, while competing with the rest of the SWM community, through resellers.

Revan was a great example. He is a fan favorite. I could potentially see a fan joining the game out of excitement for playing a revan squad. To then be told that you have to dish out 50-60 for the piece... well, many new players would drop the game at that point. Sure its a bummer for those of us who pulled one or actually bought the mini for the crappy wotc version... but the way I see it... with the current v-set rules, now I have a card that is worth using with my revan mini, and I also have an opportunity to use him because of new players and the community that has stuck with the game.

however I don't do every one.

I've seen people use non-minis tokens from other games.

won't be to long until a dime will be Revan, and that grey rock is Lord HothUnsure

Please, please... revan is medium. At least use a quarter.

A thousand times this.

We have to promote the game to new players as much as possible. A big part of that is lowering the initial investment to start playing. Being able to use minis other than the actual Rare or Very Rare recommended mini is a big part of that. Yeah, it might feel like it "devalues" the WotC pieces you have, and that's a shame, but that's a much smaller deal than being able to get new players into the game, and telling a new player "Well, with the V-sets you really don't have to spend much money to make a good squad" is a very big selling point.

The official floor rules state that it has to be clear what each proxy is, and you can only proxy for V-set pieces. This means that WotC pieces are still valuable (if you want to play Mouse Droids or Ugnaughts, you still have to own those) and you can't just have totally random, jank commons representing a mini.

Agreed. If regionals or GenCon wanted to require the recommended minis for Vset pieces, I'd be okay with that. I'm not even sure that's necessary, though. For local tournaments or casual play, any proxy piece that the opponent can clearly identify should be fine.

I think last year's experience showed us very clearly that we never have to do this. Case by case basis for any issues between the players and the judge cover all of it (heck, I've never even seen it get past the two players myself). I for one am glad, I was worried initially that some might try to cheat by using "similar" proxies on occasion. But I'd say we will go forward as we are, with leaving it to be handled by the players and the judge.

Thanks for al your replies. I'd definitely prefer to have more new players! Two of my friends play with exact recommended minis, so I can just have my own little world with them ;)
