So I was thinking about this yesterday. The vsets have totally revolutionized the game for me. So many new squads have been made possible, and the game has gotten as close to a level playing field for the factions than ever before IMHO. I doubt I would have remained interested in the game without them. The ability for community members to have input into the creative process has also been awesome. Having had a small role in play testing for R&R (sadly not so much for Scum because of lack of time to devote to it) I loved the experience of trying out fresh minis and even being able to have some input.
So, how have the vsets kept the game going for you? Please share :)

Having forbidden myself to play for a while during the final few months of my degree, it has almost been like coming into a new game. Unfamiliar squads and meta. Unfamiliar minis. I love it. It feels like 2009 all over again.

I love that every single faction has something(some even multiple things) to win with. Not everything is the same old same old squads over and over again. It's more challenging to predict what you'll see at a regional, but that's something I love about it. There's so much balance and yet there is still lots of variety! :)

Vast improvement to me. On the whole, the Vset pieces are more fun, more balanced, and the cards are even better quality than the WotC cards. On top of that, no new minis means the game keeps going but it doesn't cost as much to keep up.

I am getting back into minis after leaving for about 2 years. For some reason, I feel like the new sets are unfair, and the game feels different.... I don't know why either. Maybe it's just because there aren't any actual peices for them. I have yet to use them, but I will probably have to sometime soon.

I absolutely love the vsets. You guys stated many of the reasons. I even think the Epics have opened up a new style of gameplay. I hope they keep on coming!

I liked what someone said on the thread on another website, where someone was criticising the v-sets. They said: Quote:As an outside observer here (never played Star Wars Minis, but have played a lot of other minis systems), it sounds like the real problem is that the GAME sucks for casual play. The balance is poor, there are good pieces and bad pieces. Casual people want an even game, which due to their small collections are mostly bad pieces.
The Vset simply casts this problem that's always been there into the light of day making it harder to ignore. Now you've got it right in your face because most of the Vset is "good" which makes the high percentage of old "bad" models stand out. You can't play a team of mostly bad models against someone with mostly good models, so you have to either ignore the Vset or embrace it. You can't really mix them with mostly bad models successfully, you'll get your ass handed to you.
What you want for casual play is an environment where balance is pretty good so that you can run whatever you want, with a wide variety of models being viable. Its an exhilarating freedom, you're right to want it. People with big collections could do that already. Casual players with small collections made due and it worked because nobody had enough good models to really break it. Now for the first time you get what sounds like a pretty flat (power-wise) collection of models. It's what you always wanted, you can pick & choose from a wide collection of stuff that's EQUALLY powerful so you can use what you like. Don't get hung up on whether it's still compatible with your old stuff. Take the handful of good models you had before, put them with the Vset, and rejoice in a superior new casual gaming environment. I think, if you were used to playing in an environment where the best squads (so squads like Rebel Han Cannon, Imperial Black and Blue, Republic Yobuck swap, New Republic Solo Charge, Separatist Lancer) were being used before the v-sets, the v-sets are awesome as they introduce lots of new options at that high power level. They also make sense, and are a logical continuation of the game. But if you liked mucking around with the mediocre/casual/older pieces from the Wizards of the Coast sets, there aren't many pieces from the v-sets on that level, so the v-sets do seem overpowered in comparison. I wasn't involved in my playgroup right from the start, but by the time I started playing, a lot of the more committed players were reading Bloomilk and other boards, and were aware of what the best pieces in each faction were, and what combinations of pieces worked well together. So the v-sets just felt natural to me, and I think they're great. I feel like I've said this a lot, but I much prefer an environment where I don't just play against Rebels and New Republic all the time.

Vsets saved the game. Made things balanced, kept interest, and generated excitement in a so called "Dead Game". I thought when WoTC dropped the SWM License and decided to quit making pieces and cards, that my favorite game was over, but I enjoy the game even more now that the SWM community is running it.

Oh man, I kind of skimmed that thread that you're talking about, but I missed that post. That's freaking brilliant, and is the best way I've heard it put. SWM kinda DOES such for casual play. Atris, Bastila, Zannah, and Mace might highlight that, but if you don't think that Yobuck, Lancers, or Override (especially before Ugnaughts and R7s existed!) were super casual-unfriendly, you're just plain being disingenuous. The funny thing is, I think if you play with JUST V-sets, it's a whole lot more casual friendly. The problem is with mixing old bad pieces with new good pieces, but that's ALWAYS been a problem. If you're a casual player who likes playing swarms of Stormtroopers or Ewoks or whatever, Yobuck hurts you even more than Bastila will. Heck, playing just Rebel Storm was terribly unbalanced (I remember, I did it!). You want to play a team of Rebel Troopers? Ha, your opponent is playing Darth Vader, you're probably going to lose. There has always been a really big gap between the "good" pieces and the "bad" pieces, there were just fewer "good" pieces before. Playing something on the "bad" side of the gap has always been bad, and you won't have any more trouble winning now than you did before because you basically had 100% trouble before. The gap didn't get bigger at all, one side just got more heavily populated.

I'm one of those gamers that keep up on ALL the sets but never really master anything. I just love the variety and the possible combos. My lifetime winning percentage is close to 1% but I understand the rules pretty well and will get better if I put my mind to it... maybe... The V-Sets are awesome!

As much as I love to comment on how poorly thought out some of the v-set mini's and abilities are, I think they are a great thing for the game and the community as a whole. The best thing they have done though? Given the community a group who sometimes listens to comments and adjusts their ideas for them, as opposed to a closed group we had to hope would get it right.

For my brother and myself the V-sets are fantastic. We play what we have in are collection and the v-sets. There are just some strategies and pieces that we don't have that the v-set fill in for us.

You said it perfectly FlyingArrow, love the cheap cost and not needing to make space for any more miniatures. It sucks that some pieces that are hard to make will never be produced in plastic painted glory. But some are easy enough to customize and it's great that a lot of these new cards have brought back pieces that plainly had either gone bad (destroyer Droid) or were never good to begin with (commando droids) and rebirth them into a cool piece that actually allows you to bring a new model that you never would have before. I suppose in essence that it's kind of like getting new pieces when the old ones are finally good eh? Another place that same bit is present is in the uniques, and their much needed redos (Grievous, Old Republic/Republic in general) Also some of those "old bad pieces" are being made good again thanks to new vset support, I.e. Luke Jedi Master, Leias, rakghouls, tuskens, etc... Finally I will echo what was said about how cool it is that the new designers actually listen to input and change things based on the community. Cool to see ones own ideas actually used and listened to as well. For all of us Albertan Canadians we are loving the new pieces (especially the epics! Pumped for that second set!) and hope to see many more in the future. It's funny with Mapmaker/jedicartographer's maps and the steady and professional VSET support this game is more alive then ever. Just need to get someone on selling customs haha
