Would you want signatures for the forums?

No, forums often look cluttered with signatures.

I would love an avatar as it usually helps me identify users quickly, but signatures often make things too long.

Signatures are just annoying unless they're short and relevant or minimized with some kind of spoiler button. I could definitely live with avatars along with a few lines of text though.

I'd be more into avatars than signatures. Most forum signatures tend to be garish and overbearing. Avatars make for good personalization without going overboard. On an aside note, this reminds me that I still have all my SW avatars I made up sitting on my photobucket account ( link).

PS No to signatures.
