Attack! Remember, it's just a game.
How many activations do you generally have?

Just curious, if its not as fun why do you limit your self to an hour? And you also said friendS, are you having more than 2 people in a game? If so theres another reason why, because of my solitude from the rest of the community I only ever play 1v1v1 game with my brother and friend, which takes longer. Often times 3 hours or so for a 200 pt game. Points can make a difference too. I assume your playing 200, but more pieces=more activations and planning=more time.

Hi all, my friends and I recently started to play our skirmish games with a one hour time limit. When we do this nothing really happens in the game other then people getting a few rounds of gambit and a mouse droid or 2 getting shot.Sad Also the game only lasts for about 5 rounds.Cursing Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make these games more fun?ThumpUp ThumpUp Woot what you are doing is playing like it is a competition. STOP change a number! squad size time limit activations based on my tournament experience, you CANNOT have fun playing 200 point games in 1 hour U R PLAYING 4 FUN so....................have fun

If it is just a 1 on 1 game and is taking an hour or more for you to get through 5 rounds and shoot a couple of mouse droids, then I would suggest working on speeding up the play speed of the group. The game will be much more fun if there is actually action going on rather than running around doing nothing for 50 minutes and then 10 minutes of trying to get points to "win" an unfinished game.
One easy way to do this is a stopwatch (or chess clock if you have one) and just show everyone how long it takes to make a move. It can show some surprising results. I know that when I am playing, I am always thinking of what I am doing next. For instance, we all know that in most games people move all their scrubs first. I pretty much know where all my scrubs are going to go so as soon as my opponent moves his guys it only takes me 5 seconds or so to make my move (spin Mas, run this rodian over there or "only one" then spin Dodonna, etc). This allows me to spend a little longer once the decisions become harder and still be able to play a game to its full finish in a 1 hour time limit.
Multiplayer games do tend to take longer as there are the in game politics of who to attack and when to attack, etc.

Urbanjedi's post is very helpful. Thinking several turns ahead is important, not only for playing faster, but also for playing better, because it will help you set up attacks and maneuvers more effectively.
As for the other side of the discussion, I think it really matters why you're playing. For me, it is FUN to push myself to play as fast as possible. Really, this comes back to the old discussion about there being two broad categories of players: those players who consider "competitive play" to be fun, and those players who consider "casual play" to be fun. Generally speaking, the casual players will tend to see the time-pressure as a burden rather than another challenge to be tackled, while the competitive players will tend to see the time-pressure as a benefit.
Therefore, what the OP needs to ask his group is, "What kind of play group do we want to develop?" If they want to develop a group that competes in the various "big events" like Regionals and Minis Mania (ie, if they consider "competitive play" to be fun), then they'll quite simply have to learn how to play quickly if they want to do well. But if they prefer "casual play" then there really is no need to impose the 1-hour time limit, which is only used in competitive play.

Or increase Gambit value. Otherwise try a new map or 500 point armies with one epic. Epic only can get Gambit and Gambit worth 75 points

my gf hates how slow the game is for the first half of the match, so now we fold the map in half and only play on half... helps speed up confrontation

I'm one of Joseph blob's friends, and our games only take long usually with one other member of our group who takes forever to decide where to move an ugnaught. Ironically, the same friend wants the 1 hour time limit. I, personally usually have no problem finishing a 200 pt game in an hour, or a little more.

You could also try Tile Wars where you play the whole match on two tiles put end to end. That is a great and quick format.

Do you play gambit rules? If so, one thing you can do is play a squad and map that allows you to get into gambit quickly. Something like a big beefy melee piece with R2 or Ganner, or the Mandalorians with the Training Sergent can allow you to get first round gambit on the right map. That might at least force the other player to engage more quickly, so you don't get too far ahead on gambit - although it doesn't stop them playing slowly.
I often find it's about time to engagement - if you have a plan for how you want your squad to look like when engagement happens, and carry it out quickly, games are much more fun. I find in good games, you go through the first couple of rounds in about 10 minutes, so you have 50 minutes for the fun bit where you're actually engaged.

There's some good suggestions here, but I'll add some as well. We have 5 players in our group here in Hawera NZ, and we run a lot of group games. I can understand the tendency for people to hold back a little, because in a group game if you stick your snout out it's gonna get smacked multiple times. But there's a couple of variations we use to get the action moving. Sometimes we play "Gas Chamber". At the end of each round, the gas comes into the first square around the edge of the entire map. Anyone caught within the gas takes 10 damage, which applies to all characters including Droids (my guess is that it's highly corrosive ), and cannot be prevented or reduced. At the end of the next round, the gas comes in one more square, and so on. This encourages people to get moving, because your Ugs, Mice, etc. will die if they're in the gas for even one round, and your other characters probably don't want to be stuck out there taking 10 damage every round. Another thing we do sometimes is use "Hawera Gambit" instead of regular gambit. With Hawera Gambit, each character that is on one of the middle four squares at the end of the round scores 10 points AND restores 10 HP. Best of luck, and let us know how you get on!

Just FYI, we rarely play group games. These are normal 200 pt games Joseph blob is referring to

Do a "no door control" house rule and things then to pick up nicely for quick fun games.

Hawera Gambit sounds cool! Royal Rumbles are good but not quite the same as a big map with cover came. I guess you could play a group game getting to however many points you wanted to. A free for all may be in order there.
