Has any of you ever thought of using othello game pieces to mark which of your pieces have been activated? Their little discs that are black on one side and white on the other. Their about the width of a regular minis base.

In Heroclix I would put Poker chips under pieces that had acted, it worked well there, I'd imagine a similar method would work for SWM.

Well with the othello pieces you could turn them from black to white to mark which ones had gone, then the next turn switch them back. I was thinking in a mass battle with large numbers of troops all next to each other this way might be easier then using glass beads.

We usually just turn the pieces to face one way at the start of the round. The ones who get activated face the other way. Thats just the easiest way for us to keep track and not have to carry a bunch of markers.

Thats what i do for larger activation armies. Just spin the pieces to face one side of the board, then the other... though deep down i hate it because it takes the realism away from the game (nothing like swinging 3 times and then turning your back to your enemy ThumbDown )

I used to turn my pieces as that is how I was taught, but I never liked that aspect either and I usually just ended up turn them to face the "right" way. Ever since I've started playing with FlyingArrow I've "tapped" the cards and that usually works well. Though often I fall on old habits and will turn the pieces especially at the beginning of games where there are more activations and less engagement.

Tapping is good. Where i find it to be a problem is when you have large activation squads and the table doesn't have enough room (or the squad is just to big) to lay everything out in front of you. In those situations, i typically stack identical non-unique cards, which makes it a little hard to tap one or the other. On top of that, when you have say... 5 non-uniques or more, especially those that have enough HP that they can start taking damage counters, it can be really hard to remember which card goes with which piece. Worse case scenario i've had is my mass ewok squads (i can build a 200pt army from just non-unique ewoks) or poggle bombs.

We came along this in our Forgotten Battles match because FlyingArrow had so many Battle Droids, in that case we usually find it is best to turn figures. It is just easier that way.

When I first started playing I used the card tapping method because I too wanted the more realistic look of facing the enemy you are firing at all the time.

That got to be waaaay to much of a pain for me personally though because when you run a squad with multiples of the same character (which happens frequently) then you have to break out the markers and take them on and off every round.For me that just got to be a hassle so I switched to spinning. It's easier for me that way but whatever works for you go with it.

When I play heroclix i use pennies to keep track of actions. I put a penny on the cards or on figures base for every action.

If you have enough small star/circle stickers of different colors, you can cut them in half... put one on the base of the mini and one on the card. I haven't actually done this myself, but I've seen it done and it worked great.

Im mostly trying to figure out game mechanics for huge games. I always want to see this game played in a epic size, like 300 or 400 figures on the map at once. Turning them backwards would work but it just feels wrong.

Oh, that counts as epic? some of our games must count as galactic battles them. BigGrin

These galactic battles sound intersting. What size maps do you use? Do you have any pics of them?

Sorry no pics

We have not had such a battle for a while now though, but often use 3 maps side by side.
battles ranged from 1000 to 5000 ppoints. most battles are themed such as hoth or endor.

You should also be aware that these sort of battle are won by who has killed the most enemy in points by a set time. or won by completing an objective(s)
