If you are trapped with walls on 3 sides (lets say below and to the left and right of you) and an enemy characters is occupying the space above you, can you move diagonally into the spaces beside the enemy character?

Assuming you take the AOO, count two movements for moving diagonally and that the space you move into is empty, is this movement legal?


What if you replace the enemy with difficult terrain or low objects? Can you move into the empty space beside it and avoid the difficult terrain movement cost?

You cannot move diagonally at a corner as you described, so unless you have an ability that ignores enemy characters when moving it is not possible to get past them.

Same with rough terrain/low objects. You can't bypass the movement penalty.

If a corner is beveled, both would be possible.

to my knowledge you technically do not move diagonally you enter the the square and move over one so unless you have flight or some other ability that would allow you to move through walls are enemies you would be stuck

I would agree with swinefeld. You cannot move diagonally past the corner of a wall unless it is beveled. If all other legal squares to which movement is possible are occupied by enemy characters you are essentially trapped. The only way out is if you have some special ability or force power that allows you to move through enemies such as Flight or Force Leap.

Dang. So I've been playing movement wrong.

I think the rules explanation of this is a bit misleading as it does say that moving diagonally is allowed it just costs double.

Yes, moving diagonally is allowed, and costs double. BUT, the exception here is that you cannot move diagonally past a corner wall and things like that; you have to go around vertical/horizontal. Even though you end up in the same spot, it can cause trapping, or subject you to AoO and such.

I wish the rules were more specific as up until now I had thought you could use clever diagonal movements to avoid AOOs, movement penalties of difficult terrain etc. I hate playing wrong.

In most circumstances you can, just not along those corners. When trying to bypass difficult terrain it is quite useful and can be used, as long as it is not moving diagonally past the corner of a wall.

The rulebook actually spells it out pretty clearly. CW rulebook on page 17 discusses corners under movement and then directs you to page 28 where walls are covered in greater detail.

Its all good. I should probably go back and look it over myself since its probably been a good year and a half to 2 years and I was quite the noob then.

Yeah, like Bubba Fett said, you CAN use it to avoid AoO's, Low Objects or whatever, but if there is a corner, you have to move in the L instead of diagonally.

All makes sense now. Thanks. Wish I had learned on the CW rules book. Not sure that the ones I have go into that amount of detail.
