You aren't forced to play without Thrawn or Pellaeon, the Triumvirate just gives you a new option for the Imperial build. No matter what happens, I'll wager Thrawn and Pellaeon are around for a long time. komix wrote:]Unfortunatelly, IT characters have failed that experiment.
I really don't think that is a fair statement to make just over a week after the set has been released. I think we have to give it time, see what people do with them. And I like Disra, bribery for the Empire? That is huge! Plus a way to bring in Clones that isn't super expensive? Love it. i see Komix point on this andi have to agree. No yuo are not being forced to play without them, but if you want one of these guys you are. I am not saying that they areny useful at all, i am just saying that there isnt alot of incentive to play them over thrawn because they didnt give any kind of movement breaker in a faction that rely's on swap.

I said on the show a couple of weeks ago when we were talking about the new set that these 3 were my least favorites because of the rival special ability. I still feel that way... but... I like that they were introduced. It may indeed turn out that they are not competitive pieces at this point, but who knows down the road? Future sets may build on this foundation. Even if they are never competitive, I like the flavor they bring to the game. I like the special ability rival even with its restrictions. I plan on playing them in more casual settings. Remember, not every piece created has to be nor is intended to be used in the competitive setting.

For some reason, I felt it was appropriate to bump this thread.
4 pieces with Rival in V5. Any complaints?

4 pieces with Rival in V5. Any complaints? IMO, most of the v5 pieces just feel like they have rival on for flavour and they don't really limit squad building options that much; for example, there's little reason to put Roan Fel in a squad with a Vader at 200 points when he has better synergies with other pieces. The exception is maybe Jedi Master Jorus C'baoth, where he could have been potentially abusive with some higher costing uniques at 500 points.

Without Palps, he doesn't have the staying power of most beats. I understand he will be used with other Knights and their ilk and if he's met, he's in trouble. But, if he could use his daughter's FPs (as she's the only Fel with Renewal), it might be an idea for Marcy's comraderie.

4 pieces with Rival in V5. Any complaints? None from me, I think WOTC should have done this from the start. It allows strong characters within a faction to get made without making said faction unbalanced or overpowered. Still think Vong should not be allowed droids within its build, MSG should not be in imperials (with the exception of one or two named MSG) There are many more examples but Rival too me is one of the best Vset rules to ever come out.

4 pieces with Rival in V5. Any complaints? Another set, another rival for Imps :/ While I understand placing rival special ability on Fel against Emperor and Darth, I think it should be cut down to Darth only. Let's face it- this game has been and will be (I hope so) about making combos. That's why we can put in the same squad Thrawn, Vader, even imperial knights. Not having access to force battery (potty palps) really hurts imperial knights in general (if I wanted to use the new fel of course). Now my cool idea for 500pts imperial knights is ruined On the side note I'm kinda pissed- 90 hp and no force renewal on a piece which costs almost 1/4 of my squad? Sure he won't be leading the charge, but when push will come to suffle he will die FAST (vs melee I mean). I wish he could have 100 hp like the previous version (wotc). Oh well, gotta get around it somehow. Anyway, I gotta say that I'm impressed that designers try to bring something new to the table with such SA's like Rival :) May not like it most times ( mainly because it is placed largely on imperial characters which I play) but I really appr the effort! Keep up the good work ! Hope to see many Rivals on other factions :)

Honestly, it would make more sense for it to be Emperor rather than Darth, thematically. And honestly, look at his Cortosis Gauntlet. You want to give the guy who has a 25% chance of neutering opposing Jedi more Force Points. That is where the costs you are seeing is coming from.
And this game is about making choices. I am a big fan of making a player make hard choices in squadbuilding. So in this case, do you go for Fel's boost to Knight's damage output, or do you go with a Force Battery. Though really, you might just be better off using Desann to give all your non-uniques an extra Force Point. Most of the non-uniques won't last long after they've used up their printed FPs.

4 pieces with Rival in V5. Any complaints? None from me. Jorus feels great for Rival. He's exactly how Rival should be used-to create great powers and CEs without breaking the faction. I think that the problem many had in the case of the IT was that the first part of that goal failed to be met.

That being said, I really think Rival should not be used for flavor purposes with any regularity. Goes against the spirit of the game.
