Apologies in advance if someone has already asked this question: Since Dark Force Spirit is listed as a force power can it be canceled with Force Absorb or Force Defense? The description says when it is defeated so I guess the issue is range since the defeated character is no longer on the map.

Yes. Force Powers that occur when a character is defeated can be cancelled.

Also, as part of the resolving effects list, you resolve all "when defeated" abilities/force powers before actually removing the mini from the board.
