http://www.bloomilk.com/Custom/Set/1331/the-hobbit--there-and-back-again

This is a custom set I have created to translate J.R.R Tolkien's stories to the game. You'll notice that the pieces are not very powerful by today's SWM standards: This is intentional. The idea is that this is a stand alone game, and not one you combine with the Star Wars universe. So, think of this set as the Rebel Storm of things to come.

You may notice that there is a strong lack of ranged combatants in this set. That was also intentional. In lord of the rings, most combatants are melee, and this game will reflect that. To balance this out, I have allowed ranged combat characters, but at a significantly higher price than one would expect. This is to attempt to help the issue we have experienced in SWM of range dominating the game. I have also helped this by making ranged attacks something you generally need to stand still to do. This is to help allow melee pieces the opportunity to truly shine.

I hope you enjoy, and would love any feedback anyone has to provide. I plan on eventually going through the following 3 books when I get time.

The rules are the same as star wars, with one exception. There are two styles of play. I have created factions for more themed game play experiences. This will allow players to play a Dwarf army and keep theme separate from an Elf army, for example. In this style of play, the Rebel faction acts as a faction that can be included in any Light Side squad (at this time, and non-sith faction squad). The other style of play is "Battle of five armies". in this style of play, the game is Light Side Vs Dark Side, and at this time, is the main style of game play.

Neat concept! I look forward to seeing The Two Towers set, and a Ringwraith squad!

Though, I might politely point out that Heroclix has "beat you to the punch", and released several LOTR figures for their system (in which, you could have a Ring Wraith vs Superman vs Captain Kirk vs The Predator vs Ezio Auditore vs The Prince of Persia vs Marcus Fenix vs Ryu...)
The quality is around Par with the GW miniatures, though the rules and the sheer fact you can have captain kirk vaporize a ringwraith...

That said, I prefer the SWM system (or is that, the LOTR system?) BigGrin
Will Sauron be an actual mini in game?
How will Smeagol play out?
and what of the Ents... BigGrin

Despite bloomilk not allowing me to view the set at the moment i'm sure its quite awesome, but I would have made it compatible with minis. I play a game called heroclix, where everything is compatible, now give some of the 'off brand' sets they have made are quite out there, but I can play the following characters all against each other and it be (fairly) balanced

Master Chief Vs. Marcus Fenix Vs. Superman Vs. Captain America Vs. Gandalf Vs. USS Enterprise Vs. Iron Maiden Vs. (Main character from bioshock infinite).

Its quite extensive and fun to have compatible figures from different universes.

I was going to do an Inheritance (Eragon) custom set which I think would work much better with the Star Wars mechanics (hey, they said he copied the story from Star Wars along with a host of things, so it should Razz), but decided that for what it's worth it's not worth the time right now. I hope this turns out well though Wink ThumbsUp

Hey, thanks for the feedback.
I know of the hobbit based heroclix. I've never been too keen on heroclix. I dont know why, but i just never liked the system. I was raised on DND and Star Wars RPGS, and love the d20 combat system. I'm familiar with it, and comfortable enough with it at this point to customize it with a degree of balance. While i could just pick up the heroclix, this is also way for me to exercise my creativity.

I was tempted to include a "Necromancer" in this set, but then thought it was too troubling at this time to design. I was contemplating a "The Hobbit: Appendices" mini 10 piece set next, to include a light side Sauruman (still head of the white council at this time), other white council members, and some of the dol goldur enemies (probably included sauron, still as the necromancer at this time). However, as I said, its a tricky piece to create. My first idea was having the necromancer act more life a force spirit, but that was just the first thing to come to my mind.

For a potential "Sauron" character, as in, the dark lord in his full glory, he'd probably be an EPIC character, closer to 200 points. Keep in mind, he was defeated originally by Isildur, who was just a man, so, he is powerful, but not unstoppable.

I'd take any suggestion on how to go about handling the him.

My first idea was to make gollum a dark side character, and then give frodo affinity (squad may include a character named gollum or smeagel of any faction), but felt like that wasn't really accurate... because at the time of the hobbit, gollum really was more fringe than anything. He sat in the goblin caves, praying on goblins who came close to his home, and when he lost the ring, he couldn't pursue bilbo because he was afraid of the goblins capturing him... so clearly he wasn't really part of the same faction as them, at this time. During LOTR, the dark lord summons all foul creatures to him, and gollum answers the call.. at this time, he seems a little more likely to be of their faction, but, i dunno, i'll have to think of it more. Again, suggestions appreciated.

I agree, its not the best system for LOTR, but i think it works well enough, and will be fun in the end, because i already know how to play it. Plus i can edit the game in a way that makes it more like how i wish star wars was (more expensive shooters, less mobile/GMA shooters). keep the game a bit more focuses on combat that requires getting within 6 squares.

@darthbane, we left out My Little Pony and all the custom horrorclix... Nice vs. match sounds like though!

@adambond,
I see what you mean about the imagination exercising, as my sawdust can't come up with a better way to represent Sauron... although, early sauron + Ringwraith army would be fun to play...
Smeagol/Gollum sounds conceptually evil: maybe operate on a coin toss or 'odds and even turns/initiative rolls' as to which team he's on?
He seemed a very tsundere/taciturn character; thoroughly unreliable.
