Anyone still play vassal for just competition? I log in randomly and never see anyone on. When are good times? I want to play again but I don't see much activity.

Generally evenings and Weekend afternoons in the US timezones tend to be the best times.
Also, when you log on, are you immediately logging out after seeing nobody on or are you hanging out in the lobby? Because sticking around in the lobby signals to other users that there is somebody out there that wants to play. Otherwise, they experience the same problem you're seeing, entering the lobby and not finding anyone.

I play generally the same times as EmperorDragon mentioned. Sometimes there are 4+ people online at those times.

Once again, it appears my times EST (US) don't align with everyone else's. that would be the reason.

You can also see who has been over the last couple of days or weeks. You can do it for all the Vassal modules. I cannot understand the thousands of people playing 40k on vassal. Seriously? Thousands of people are on there playing 40k and we're lucky to find a single person to play.

I get on late on Friday and weekends. That's the best time IMO. I usually get on after my wife goes to bed.

I'll try to be on. I just need to review the newer pieces.

I have wanted to play, but how is the gameplay? And are there images on the map like the actual pieces? Also what is the layout, like where are stat cards?

Once you download the modules, you can play easily. The cards aren't part of the package. But there are tiles for the pieces, blown doors, line of sight tools, and score cards.

Typically, when not on TOR, I am on @1730 ESt until 1900. Weekends are better.

I just downloaded Vassal. I'm looking for casual games too. I'm not experienced enough with the game/pieces or familiar enough with the engine to do any campaigns or leagues I see people talking about on here. Hoping there are other members either in the same boat as me or are patient and willing to accommodate skirmish or two with a Vassal noob.

School will be ending for me in a week or so, so I don't really have any time to play until then. Send me a BM so we can work things out, if you're interested.
