I use a product called instant mold (11 dollars). all you have to do is drop it in some hot water and it becomes pliable. after that you press it over a mouse droid and let it harden. then pop the mouse droid out and fill the mold with some green stuff(10 Dollars). after about an hour or so the green stuff is hard enough to be pushed out. then i paint them black and sliver. I have used the instant mold to make other things as well I am currently working on a mold of wicket. I will post it once its done

Instant Mold is a great product. granted you are not going to be able to mold a AT-AT, but If you want to do more detailed minis you might need to purchase more than just a single pack of six bars. the great thing about instant mold is that it is reusable. so just heat it back up and make a different press mold. I found that the more material you use in the mold the easier it is. Also you might need to cut the mini off of its base to get the mold to come out correctly. I also used it to mold the hand and lightsaber off or Bastila for my Zannah. I had a very difficult time getting that to work. In Fact i ended up just using the hand and the hilt and making the blades by hand.

here is the link on ebay to purchase some http://www.ebay.com/itm/INSTANT-MOLD-/310392968794?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4844dcd65a

and yes i accidentally purchased a high gloss spray instead of a matte finish. I now have both but I have to admit I like the minis with the Shine. The thing is I use simple hobby acrylic paints that are 59 cents each verses the high end model paints that are 2 to 3 bucks each. which is why I spray all of my minis afterwards so that it will protect the cheaper paints. To me the end result is still the same but the price is much cheaper plus I now I have a wider selection of paints which always comes in handy.

Great work pastorbudwine!
Highly innovative process on the molding; i shall watch with great interest... BigGrin

A brief reflection on the customs themselves though,
Im not sure if the paintwork is comparable to a matte finish; is there a particular style youre trying to emulate?
Personally i aspire to "Ironlightsaber's" paint style,
and I use a few of the top end expensive paints to try and achieve it (spray paints, GW/allejro paints, though havent yet invested in an airbrush...) I think your method would make color matching both easier to achieve and more consistent, however I am not a fan of the 'shiny' look generally speaking.

I look forward to seeing more customs from you down the line,
maybe you could try your hand at vehicles or scenery as well (to diversify your talents later on)?
All the best,
Kobayashimaru

I like the shiny look for my droids and some of the commandos if I had it to do over again I would have sprayed some of my guys with my new matte finish. I believe i sprayed the huntress with a matte finish if i am not mistaken.

As of right now my resources are limited I am trying to acquire "homeless" minis to continue improving my skills. I do not have any vehicles or scenery at the moment. however when the epic vehicle set comes out that everyone has been talking about I am sure I will have cause to acquire some new pieces.

I go hot and cold for the shine. In regards to protecting the paint, you sound like you use the same process I do.

I found the best finish is to spray with the gloss, allow to dry thoroughly, then spray with the matt.
Gives the protection cover you are after and the matt allows more of the detail to come through.

It was a pain getting the upper torso and legs to line up properly. If you had some extra pieces I would be willing to make some customs for prizes for the regional. I don't have much more in the way of extra pieces at the moment without taking apart my complete sets.

Using the new Red Robin for some Mando sculpts is a great idea! I'm totally stealing that...maybe for Mando Flametroopers, I have a Lily_Wan custom I use for Kelborn

Man, that is an excellent sculpt for a Mando. I kinda wish I hadn't used mine for Anakin Solo now. Looking forward to seeing the painted version.
