If I use a force point to re-roll an attack and I have mettle, do I have to add +4 to the result? For example, if I roll a 20 I would rather not add +4 so I can get the critical bonus.

You get the critical bonus if you roll a 20 no matter what else is added to it.

thanks Andy. If I roll a 1 on a re-roll, I assume it is a miss no matter how many mettle points I could add in, right?

Yep, a 1 always misses no matter how much you add to it

How about if you use mettle and roll a natural 16 (16+4=20) would that count as a critical hit? If so what if you have deadly attack and roll a natural 15? would that score a crit?
