I've seen it played both ways... but do you not have to announce the final spot your guy will end up after his full movement prior to making the attacks so they must end in a legal spot? Otherwise, with Lancer particularly, he can try moving to a spot that becomes legal only after killing a few figs to open up a lane.

He has to announce first - he can't go somewhere where he might end up with no place to land. What I don't remember is if he can change his movement path halfway if another alternative opens up.

You have to announce a legal landing spot before you use Strafe Attack. The path can change, but the landing spot cannot. This only applies to Strafe Attack, not Galloping Attack. Galloping Attack is moved as normal.

What happens if the landing spot becomes illegal due to an enemy moving into the landing spot during flight?

From the Glossary
" Prior to using Strafe Attack, this character must designate a legal space to end its move in. Other characters cannot enter this space while this character is using Strafe Attack."
