Hi. Star Wars miniatures is my favorite game and probably always will be... period. With that firmly established, I find the idea of heroclix interesting. My sons and I love super heros, who doesn't right, so heroclix seems like something we might like to play after many consecutive hours of SWM of coarse ;). Anyways, I know nothing of this game and was looking for a little info:

1) How similar is it to SWM?

2) Is it more involved or less? Is it straight up stats or do some characters influence other characters?

3) What is the best way to get started?

I briefly considered getting into heroclix (when the Captain America set was released; Been a HUGE Cap fan for YEARS, not one of those fanboys who just became a fan of 'The First Avenger' when it was cool, I was a fan BEFORE it was cool!), but as it seems with you, I had NO idea how to get started, what types of stuff I would need etc.... SO I let it go, and started expanding my young SWM collection. I haven't regretted it Wink

Well a few years ago you could of pick up any starter set, however over the last few years most do not come with the rules, some do some don't. kinda pot luck on that, but probably still the best way to get into the game. At lest all the info and rules are online to play strate from any starter set or indeed any pack.

Heroclix has it problems with rules how many characters can move per round, very often (bad dice rolling aside) the one who inflicts the first lot of damage wins, this is simply down to how many characters can move in a round. the cost system for what characters can do is way out, most high cost characters can really struggle as very often you might only have the 1 character, which when opponents use things like outwit perplex which is on a lot of low costed characters make them hard to play to not worth taking. which to me just seems wrong somehow as these are very often the more recognizable characters. Sure if you are a Batman fan you strike gold as he is often cheep has both outwit and perplex as well as stealth + very recognizable as a character.

there are many good points about heroclix though, it currently has plenty of minis coming out on a regular bases, plus not limited to one comic/film/T.V show and so on, they are all useable with each other regardless of from what "universe" they are from. There are so many coming out that this is not a game for collectors just because of the shear volume of clix that come out in a year, it would be impossible to get them all. The good thing is that you don't necessary need new clix to still have a very competitive squad. A squad can be as little as 1 character to infinity depending on your choice of point play. This is home play though and as mention movement becomes a big issue IMO. New game inventions do keep the game fresh though such as the recent additions of team bases.

Competitive play is different, characters are constantly retired, and are usable for aprox 2-3 years some less than that. the rules are always changing and they are constantly banning characters they have made even from the latest set because, well lets face facts they just do not play test there clix. However there is far more for competitive players in terms of prize's as they do a lot to support this game in the community.

Truth is though no minis game or any game for that matter is perfect, you will get out of it what you put in. SWM is far from perfect but hay we are still playing it years after it got canned, heroclix will be just as popular as well, but with all the super hero films coming out this is one game that has a lot of life still in it. Heroclix has characters from the DC & marvel universe as well as Halo, Star Trek, Lone Ranger to name but a few, which as mention are all playable with each other so could go on for ever.

Thank-you very much. I think I'll buy a starter set sometime that has rules and some characters I like. Sounds like fun, but I don't think I would know until I play it. I really like mini type games, but only have played SWM. Think I'll start with some DC characters, but it's hard to tell if the game play is as sophistically fun as SWM. Playing it is probably the only way to tell for sure.

Has anyone played the hobbit heroclix? i wanted to buy up some of them as Im a huge lotr fan, but i didnt know if it was worth the investment.

Heroclix are really awesome!ThumbsUp I stated into them around the same time as SWM's and loved Heroclix far more (at the time) and had a huge collection.BigGrin I typically only played with higher point teams (no less then 500 points and usually 1000 - 2000) and loved it. If only there was a working Vassel version of it (like SWm's does) I would play regularly. (I do hear they are coming out with an online version though so maybe my hope can still be realized!Woot ) Very fun, and far more balanced in the higher starting point range, like more acts, options, room for mistakes (this seems to be critical since at 300 points a single Critical hit can easily determine the winner.) plus it gives a war like feel with your favorite Super Hero/Villains. (can anyone say "Marvel Civil War"?)

It is similar to SWm's but the stats change with each hit. Suddenly your Batman who was kicken' butt now is in some serious hurt and isn't much help. (BTW a good healer is essential) on the other hand there is many figs that get BETTER when damaged (Needless to say, the Hulk) IMO the maps in Heroclix seam more realistic (though not nearly as cool looking) in terms of gameplay. I haven't played since before Thor's Hammer came out (When they started up again) do to me losing my entire collectionCrying , otherwise I would still be playing.

I know that David Weeks has started into HeroClix, and he really seems to like it. If you can get in touch with him, I think he'd be a good person to talk to, since he (like you) has a SWM background and will likely be able to answer all of your questions.

I was reading up about Clix last night, and I'd like to get into it (I'm quite interested in the Street Fighter and LotR lines, as well as obviously the X-Men). However, I've already got too many minis games:
1. SWM
2. World of Warcraft Minis (lots of fun, and it's really CHEAP now that it's discontinued)
3. Dungeon Command (I absolutely LOVE this game! I've actually got some ideas for a Star Wars version of it)
4. X-Wing (IMHO, this is less fun than the others, but still worthwhile)

So with these 4 games right now, I don't think I can justify picking up yet another minis game. Perhaps if there was a local gaming group that played....

I wish you all the best in your Clix endeavors, though!

Glad to see that you're looking into it. It is a great game. But, I am biased; I've been playing since day one just as I have with SWM.

similarities: gridded map, move, attack, figures with different powers/abilities, synergy between characters, dice, activations, impact of terrain, players turns, etc aren't exactly the same but are similar enough in feel; both are chess with (super)powers. Both are very fun games.

differences: line of sight is measured differently, HC ranged attacks have ranges instead of SWM's infinite range, activations are a bigger element in HC, HC powers/abilities change during the game instead of the static SWM card (more 'realistic', but also more unpredictable), HC synergy is much more specific between figures than most SWM CEs, bell curve die probability in HC vs straight prob in SWM.

I tend to think of SWM as more involved because of the plethora of CEs and the stacking of those. HC has much less of that stuff to remember throughout the game.

HC is in an alpha strike phase which some players love while some aren't so enthralled with that environment.

Otherwise, I think in most respects that both games have the same involvement. Unless you have the Ash Ketchem mentality that most of us seem to have. Laugh There are way more HC figs and more rarities. Having OP prizes in HC is a nice draw.

Buy a starter set (X-Men vs Avengers is the most current), check out the WizKids' event system to find a store and games, and go and play.

Some places are more competitive while others are more casual. But you've seen that with SWM also.

Let me know if you want to Skype or TalkShoe; sometimes a conversation is easier/more fluid than typed messages back and forth.

HeroClix is going through a phase where alpha strike teams are dominant in competitive play and when used can take some of the fun out of the game. Alpha strike just refers to having a team that can hit first and usually hit hard.

There are a variety of pieces over the past year or so that have given a player the ability to move across the board faster than in the past (team bases, Spiral, and Bat-Mite are a few examples). There are a variety of options (like Book of Skulls hammers, Additional Team Ability cards like Heroes for Hire, and the Utility Belt) that let you hit easier and harder than in the past.

New rules to counter the overpowered aspects of the above are going into effect, so some of the balance that was lost over the past year will be restored.
