in the wording of strafe attack is says:

Some characters with Flight also have Strafe Attack. This character can move up to double speed and attack each enemy whose space it enters instead of using the targeting rules. Roll each attack just before this character enters that enemy’s space. This character cannot attack any enemy twice in the same turn using Strafe Attack, and it cannot move directly back into a space it has just left. A character with Strafe Attack can still make a normal attack on the turn it moves, as long as it moves its speed or less. Prior to using Strafe Attack, this character must designate a legal space to end its move in. Other characters cannot enter this space while this character is using Strafe Attack.

The word "can" in the dictionary is defined as:
to be able to; have the ability, power, or skill to

Could a player using strafe attack with an IG Lancer choose to fly over a piece with Riposte and not attack it so it doesn't risk taking a possible Riposte that may kill it?

I suspect the answer is "yes, the player using Strafe Attack has the choice to attack any piece in it's path". If it had to, I would think the word "can" would have been "must"

Thoughts?

The strafer must attack everyone it passes over. The word 'can' in this case applies to the whole ability. This character can: "move up to double speed and attack *each* enemy..." It's all or nothing.

(On the other hand, a galloping attacker can pick and choose who to attack and I can't quite parse the difference in the language in the glossary. In any case, that's how it was ruled.)

So *Can* refers to the ability to perform the act of Strafe Attack. It probably would have been worded *any* instead of *each* if it was meant to be a choice for who to hit. I guess I was fixated on the *Can* part as a choice.

Not dumb. Most of the rules in this game are very consistent. Confusion comes when you try to apply common sense to the rules... if you just go with the game terms you usually get things right. However, one place where the rules aren't consistent is the word "can". Sometimes it is "may" and sometimes it is "must". You really just have to check with each instance, although I think it's "must" more often than "may". They really should have never used the word "can" in any definition and always used either "may" or "must".

Not at all, donny, FlyingArrows explanation of "can" is the best I've seen so far. Usually the reason is "In this game can = must.".Confused

Also don't forget that you can choose NOT to strafe while your guy is tooling around, meaning you won't strafe anyone that you fly over, but can be a neat way to get past those pesky self destruct characters and maybe you can win init and get a crack at those squishy commanders with your strafer.
