according to the glossary for the older version, he can only use it on an adjacent character
Instead of taking its normal turn, this character deals 10 points of damage to an adjacent living character. If the character is an ally, it can make a save of 11 to remove 10 points of damage from itself instead. If the save fails, that ally takes 10 points of damage.

The new one is worded the same way. He can't be adjacent to himself, nor is he his own ally, so he is not subject to the remove damage part of the ability.

It kind of makes sense, flavor-wise. You can perform homicidal surgery on yourself--you'd die, and there would be no chance for a save of 6.
