All my life i have been confused about how this commander effect and similar ones work can some one please explain how the mechanics work? "At the end of this character's turn, choose 1 adjacent non-Unique follower. That follower gets +10 Damage until the end of this character's next turn, or until this character is defeated."

So you choose a guy at the end of your turn. He gets +10 damage so does 20 instead of 10 or 30 instead of 20 or whatever. Then he keeps that bonus damage until the first character goes again.
An example would be
End adjacent to say a klat assassin and grant him +10 damage. Now the klat goes and now does 30 damage (20 reg +10 from the CE). The round ends. Next round begins. Go with the Klat again because it still has the +10 damage because the other guy hasn't gone yet. Now after the klat goes, go with the other guy and give the +10 damage to someone else who hasn't gone yet and you can effectively get it on two guys per round if you set it up right.
Hope that helps.

Here's a twist: the commander combines fire, does he then have no "turn" and thus the guy who has +10 damage still has +10 damage? We've always played it that way.

Just like if you use an ERC to combine fire the override stays whatever it was as he had no end of turn to trigger the end of it.
