My friend and I are having a disagreement on Melee Reach 2 and have looked all over the internet trying to find an answer, which we could not find in Errata, any handbooks or forums. "Melee Reach 2: When attacking, this character treats enemies up to 2 squares away as adjacent" The argument boils down to diagonal squares. My argument is that since diagonal squares cost 2 to move through, that Melee Reach 2 only reaches 1 square outwards, and also you measure the distance of certain abilities like Force powers by counting squares going squares like movement (unless I've been doing that wrong, too). His argument is that it literally reaches out two squares, as the wording has nothing to do with movement. To demonstrate, my interpretation is on the top and his is on the bottom: Which of us is correct? We'll accept either, and it only comes up with a few characters, but this is one of the few things we haven't been able to get a solid answer on.

You are correct. Anything that has you counting squares at all (for range, movement, reach, etc.) is done the same way. Orthogonal movement is 1, diagonal movement is 2.

Wonderful then, thank you very much.

I have one question to add to this. How does that work for the corners then, because the corners already count as adjacent? I was under the impression that you could count the first adjacent square that is the corner and then could count one other square away, but not two diagonal squares away. Am I incorrect in assuming this?

If I'm understanding correctly, the square you're describing would be three squares away. No bonus from MR for adjacent diagonals.

Am I incorrect in assuming this? If this is what you mean, which is to say that the blue X represents an enemy, I don't believe that it would be considered adjacent, since it would be three squares away (as I believe you do not count through walls). Or am I not understanding what you meant?

Am I incorrect in assuming this? Yes, that is an incorrect assumption. When counting distance you start with the character, not with an adjacent square. (And the character is zero squares away from itself.) Corners are adjacent, but they are also two squares away from the character. The definition for adjacent and counting distance are separate things.

It's not the most intuitive situation, but it's consistent with other game rules.
