I don't play tourneys and really only play about once a month but one rule has me so baffled. Diplomat.

How does this work?

I understand it like this:
If an attacker can see another enemy but a diplomat is in-between the attacker and the enemy then there is no legal target because targeting rules still apply even though you can't target the diplomat.
BUT
You could hit a diplomat if it is the only enemy in view

So if you were to base a diplomat to an opponents piece it could not attack unless it moves away. Also in theory, you could trap a piece against a wall by trapping it with diplomats as long as there is another piece within line of site on the other side of the diplomats.

Please clear me up.

Thanks

Everything was right except the part about a diplomat in between an attacker and another potential target. If the diplomat is not adjacent, he has no effect on targeting other characters because he does not count as the nearest enemy.

Targeting rules:
* If an enemy is adjacent, only adjacent enemies are legal targets.
* Otherwise, an enemy is a legal target if it has no cover or is the nearest enemy.

Assume an attacker can see both a diplomat and another enemy. A diplomat (if adjacent) counts as adjacent and prevents an enemy from targeting anything else. But if not adjacent, it doesn't count as the nearest enemy so the enemy can target something else (but not the diplomat).

Also keep in mind that you can attack a diplomat not just when they are the only enemy in LoS, but also if you have LoS only to diplomats. It's a really small distinction so it's easy to mess up, but if you can see 5 diplomats but no non-diplomats, then the diplomats can be attacked.

Basically, diplomats don't give protection to other diplomats. Only non-diplomats give protection to diplomats.

It's a gimmick, but very exploitable in the right squad. I used a squad with stealth and diplomats at gencon this year and they served me quite well.

Oh very sneaky. Just because a stealth piece is hidden as far as targeting goes, doesn't mean that it can't be found with line of sight distinction.

Correct.

Which reminds me of one of the biggest rules loopholes out there. If you are within 6 squares of a character with super-stealth (but not adjacent), you are screwed. That character has super-stealth, so you cannot target it unless adjacent. But you are within 6 of that character, so the part about Stealth characters not counting as the nearest enemy does not apply. So it is the nearest enemy but you can't attack it. Unless there's something else with no cover or something else closer, you can't attack anything.
