Hello, I am new to the game and to this forum. I originally got some pieces from a friend to use for the Imperial assault game and am now beginning to get into this as well. I was just wondering if there are any other resources for this game that I should be looking into (youtube videos for beginners, free downloadable maps or other game content, other websites that have useful resources, etc.). I have been lurking for a bit and checking out the different parts of this site and I think I get most of it but any pointers or advice to help better use this website (especially trading) is appreciated.

As I mentioned before I am hoping to do some trading or buying on here as I prefer to give my business back to the game community before I go to online singles markets so any advice on trading or buying is appreciated. Also, is there any website that is most commonly used to figure out an average price for pieces? I have some experiences with trading games & game pieces on other websites and was wondering what the typical protocol for trading and buying is here (maybe there is a thread with this info somewhere)?

I noticed some sets that are V sets and from what I have gathered they are just cards. How do I go about getting these?

Thanks for all the help and happy gaming!

Welcome!

I'll throw a whole bunch of links your way.

You're already at BlooMilk, which is the most active discussion forum. It also has a database of pieces, a squadbuilder and a collection tracker, which you may have already explored. Find them in the menus above.

Rules:

Most of the important rules links are in the sticky thread in the rules forum:
http://www.bloomilk.com/Forums/default.aspx?g=posts&t=1090

Here's another link that has much of the same information:
http://swmgamers.com/SWM/SWM%20Rules%20Main.html

Maps:
You asked about free maps so I'll address that first. swinefeld has some map images available somewhere in his repository of all things Star Wars Minis:
http://1drv.ms/1FhSth9

But printing one out or having it printed is probably more expensive than just buying maps.

You can buy Star Wars maps at these links:
Miniature Market: http://www.miniaturemarket.com/
Christopher West "MapMaker": http://maps-of-mastery-store.myshopify.com/
Matt Francella "JediCartographer": http://www.mcssl.com/store/dd1a825840564181b5cf8c4b35856c

A complete list of Star Wars Miniatures maps (with images):
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/94b3f86ypxwje0s/AAB_FWBHtbZrZqpgXcAufK1Xa/MapList%20January%202014.pdf?dl=0

(Okay, it's not quite complete... there have been some new maps that came out since that list was made, but it's still a great resource.)

The best "bang for your buck" regarding maps is generally accepted to be Matt Francella's Map Pack 4 (Strongholds). I think his Map Pack 6 (Pirate's Moon) may end being just as good. This is in terms of a good price for multiple good, playable maps that produce good skirmishes. Maps that are not too wide open, not too many or too few doors, neither side has a huge advantage.

Vsets:
These are in fact just cards. Use one of the existing Wizards of the Coast minis as a proxy, or create customs. You can download images of the cards here and then print them out:
http://swmgamers.com/SWM/V-setMain.html

The sets were professionally printed when they came out, and many of those printed sets are still available. Contact user "urbanjedi" for details. I know the first set isn't available anymore but most of the others are. Each set is about 50-60 cards, and there are 10 sets. The 11th set will be printed this month or next month, and the fundraiser for that is happening now. (You may have already seen those threads.)

The Vsets are fully integrated into the squadbuilder and the character database here. They are legal for the regional tournaments and GenCon championship that you'll hear announcements about in the coming months.

Quick note about Vsets...

Wizards of the Coast produced Star Wars Miniatures with a very skewed power level. They did it intentionally, I'm sure, to promote sales of booster packs and create "chase" pieces that were exceptionally strong. In the end, they produced about 900 different pieces over 6 years. But of those, only 100-200 of those pieces were "tournament-worthy".

With the Vsets, the goal was to produce new cards that were on par with the tournament-worthy pieces from Wizards of the Coast. Most Vset cards meet that goal, and there are now over 600 Vset pieces. Probably a little less than half of them are "tournament-worthy". That leaves us with roughly 400 tournament-worthy pieces: 150 WotC and 250 Vsets (just rough guesses). If you look at the Vsets as a whole they will appear a lot stronger than WotC as a whole, due to the skewed power levels that WotC produced.

I mention all this because if you have a smaller collection (100 minis or so), you probably have about 10-20 tournament-worthy pieces. Tossing in all the Vsets at once means tossing in 250 more tournament-worthy pieces. It makes it look like the Vsets are overpowered. If you want to mainly play with the original WotC minis, you may want to avoid the Vsets to start - or just use 1 or 2 pieces at a time. On the other hand, the Vsets are free to use, so if you want to start playing with tournament-worthy squads (and maybe even find a play group to hold tournaments), you can do that right away with minimal investment. You don't have to track down any super-expensive minis to be competitive.

now it' easier to start with 2-3 factions you like, for whatever reason, and collect them, plus fringe.
Rebels and Imperials are both strong, and would give you minis to use in IA.

member pegolego an my self are a good way to get minis to start with.
your collection is only limited by your budget.
check to see if any members live nearby, so you can game.
also, you can play online with Vassel, but I know very little about that.
good luck finding minis, and welcome to Bloo Milk!!!

Also, where are you located? I know multiple people would welcome new players if you happen to live near any of them.

Thanks for the responses so far. Great advice! I'm from Niagara Falls, NY. Is there somewhere that I can check to see who else is near me that plays?
