Hello,

I have printed several V-sets, but they are difficult to use when playing casual games with inexperienced players. Are there any simpler somewhat popular sets of cards for playing with characters from recent movies that have still had a little bit of playtesting and are likely to be more balanced than something I can improvise? Even for casual play it is fun if both players have some chance of winning.

Just taking some V-set cards and crossing out most of the abilities to simplify just seems like a bad and boring solution.

Well, the original WOTC cards are a Lot simpler to use and might be the best way to introduce new players. Other than some custom cards scattered around in this forum, the V-Setters haven't made anything (yet) from the new movie; and I agree, cutting out abilities sounds like a bad idea; might cut out the fun flavor of each character.

Good luck and have fun

I would recommend just sticking with WotC. I think Vset cards make the game more fun, but they do tend to be more complex. Maybe add 1 Vset card per side for variety if you want.

For simpler skirmishes, you either want to go with one really big piece (cost 50+) and then simple fodder. The big piece may be complex, but it's just one card while the rest of the squad is easy. Or go with swarm squads where every piece is the same with just 1 or 2 simple boosts. Also, keeping skirmish size to 50 or 100 points instead of 150 or 200 points means there are fewer pieces to deal with. That also simplifies things.

defiantly play WotC with new players.
when they get tired of that, then introduce Vsets, one at a time .
let them understand each set before moving to the next one.

Great question!
Surf and CerousMutor have some cards solely from NuWars films,
and there is a sub-set of Rebels TV Show (and the 3D Clone Wars Show) of VSET Cards,
they're simple-ish, with not too many new abilities not from the standard rulebook to learn.
They'd be great for something quick and easy,

in terms of making your own customs,
there were a few spreadsheet programs which made the costing algorithm
(folks had cracked the costing formula a while back),
so that helps cost your minis in the right ballpark,
to make simple versions of characters with abilities only from a given rulebook
(and, with a limit on the types of abilities etc) sounds like a great idea for exhibition match miniatures.
It'll be great to see what you can come up with BigGrin

If you were thinking of having rarity correlate to complexity,
similar to the ideas that the "Legacy Format" folks were designing around,
ie
commons have 0-3 SAs etc,
uncommons have 0-5,
rares have 1-7
Very Rares have 2-8
that would have been awesome to see consistently used as a design principle from day one of the game;
it's as though in the WotC sets, no-one kept a design exegesis handy until the fifth set hehehe.

Clone Strike and Rebel Storm at 100 and 150, play as a very simple version of the game;
so, that style of design might help in making simple variants of pieces?

I've dabbled a little with low-res stat cards,
and they're what the locals have playtested over time, to arrive at different versions BigGrin
when we play tested them,
we had just a paper format, which we tinkered with on the fly
(sometimes during a game, after a mini was defeated and brought back in via reserves)
and humorous sketches as placeholders for the actual sketches of some minis...

Thanks for the info!

The reason I look for cards to print (see also the thread I created about printing bloomilk Customs) is that I (not to mention my kids!) want to play with custom figures for Rebels for instance, and also that sometimes (well, twice so far) we like to play with LEGO minifigs instead of official miniatures, and that brings in even more figures I have no official stat cards for.

And also some of the characters I have real minis and cards for are just too complex to play with my kids (and their friends) and some that I would even avoid bringing to new adult players. For instance I could really make use of a much simpler, but still balanced and powerful, Vader card.

EDIT: Of course balanced and powerful are relative concepts. :) I am talking about games were all characters on both sides are very low on special abilities and commander effects. So just bumping up Vader's hit points will make him powerful even with just one or two special abilities. They would have to be good matches for some older WOTC simpler figures, but not cost-effective against later WOTC or V Set cards of course.
