If a character with Savage starts the move within 6 squares of a character with Empathy, but moves more than 6 squares away, do they continue their move as if they do not have Savage, or do they have to base an enemy if they can? In other words, do you check for Savage at the beginning of a move or at every step along the way?

(This came up during the spoilers thread a few weeks ago and we guessed at an answer but never got an official response.)

I thought I knew the answer but wasn't sure, so I looked in the glossary, where I found this:

Empathy: Allies with Savage within 6 squares of this character are treated as if they did not have that special ability. If they begin a turn within 6 squares, they can ignore the movement restrictions imposed by Savage. Whenever they are within 6 squares, they are subject to commander effects.

So, to my interpretation:

No, Savage would not turn back on just because the Savage character moved out of range of the Empathy character. However, the Savage character WOULD have to be within 6 of the character with Empathy to be subject to CEs. Exactly what point that would be would depend on when you "check" for the applicability of the CE (i.e., with Mobile Attack, it would be the point at which the character wants to move again after attacking).

Thanks - that makes sense. I guess I looked at the glossary entries for Savage and Mobile Attack but not Empathy.

Would this be the same with Slave and starting within 6 of a commander?

Wouldn't they become Savage again, just not have to move adjacent to an enemy?

PS. Thread has been Zombiefied

My understanding is that the movement portion is 100% effected by where the character starts the move, then it's moot.

However - the being effected by CEs, as well as being considered "savage", are only effected by distance from empathy (or for Slave distance from a commander).

There are cases where you have a savage shooter, but they are boosted by a CE that effects savage (Celeste Morne, Exar Kun, etc). You have an enemy 12 away, and with savage you'd be forced to base them (and not attack). But if they STARTED w/in 6 of empathy, then moved 6 to outside of empathy, the "Savage" CE would kick in, but they'd not be restricted by movement since they started inside the empathy "bubble". Then they can shoot with the bonus.

I think this is correct. Apologies for my imprecise language three years ago. The character would still count as having savage, but not have to move adjacent to an enemy, if they started within six of a character with Empathy and then moved out of that range.
