I just had a crazy thought and I have my flame shield ready and waiting for all the hate around this idea,
What if we developed SWM series 2. A brand new start to the entire thing from stormies to Darth Bane. There would be no meta fixing, power creep, combo considerations from release one.
The set would be 150 characters and Fringe would only be for tech not as a faction of their own.
Just canon: Rebels NR OR Rep Sep Imps Sith Fringe - tech
No Vong No Mandos - (up for debate) No squad altering abilities No swap No booming voice No super stealth No Savage No random seen once characters like Rathtars and scene filler toy sellers.
Rebels Luke Leia Han Chewie Old Ben Ghost Crew Rogue One Troopers/pilots
NR Resistance Troopers/Pilots Whatever else is still canon
OR KotOR stuff bane book series stuff Troopers
Rep Movies 1, 2 and 3 Clone wars
Sep Movies 1, 2 and 3 Clone wars
Imps Movies 3, 4, 5 and 6 First Order Rogue One movie Boba - yes imp. He was never any of the republics or rebel or sith or sep
Sith All the canon bad asses Gloomwalkers
Fringe Flavorless tech (R7, uggies, mice, etc..)

Absolutely nothing stopping you from doing this. I'd participate in an alternative format tournament with these pieces if you set it up

Lol, the idea has been done before, but before the new movies. I'm agreed on a lot of the things, but I am a fan of the books, tv shows, and comics, so the movies are not the only universe I see.
Mandos are big in the TV show, so I could easily see them as being in this. The Vong, thank God, are not. Fringe is a faction of its own... But only in sub-faction form. Like Hutt Cartel, and what not. First Order would be a new faction. And The Resistance would be a new faction At some point, the NR would be its own faction.
The idea is great, but the problem really is Squad Builder, and having a list of Updated legal pieces. Believe me, thats a hassle to remember. Not crazy to do it, just very... very... very tedious.

The bolded items I agree with 100%. Your fringe idea I would give a new faction name like 'cartel' or something and leave Fringe alone as wildcard pieces.

If we're starting from the ground up, why make 7+ factions to balance? Do what the Old WOTC TCG did and just have Light, Dark, and Fringe.

The term defined is "Fringe-only" squads. Basically, as someone else said above re: the TCG, it falls to Light Side or Dark Side alignment, and then Fringe as random support. :)

I think Star Wars Minis 2.0 is a fantastic idea. I don't know that I'd dumb it so far down as basic light and dark, but I do recall Rob saying if he had it to do over he would have made everything with the name Republic in it just "Republic," so no New or Old - which makes sense. I don't think you really need a "Sith" faction either - just make those pieces Fringe with the Sith ability (may not be in a Republic or Rebel squad).

This looks like a good place to ask this. Does anyone know why they made the star wars game base 10 for damage and health instead of base 5 like DnD minis? DnD came out first: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeons_%26_Dragons_Miniatures_Gamebefore star wars minis did: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars_MiniaturesI would have thought that the base 5 system would be better as it adds more subtlety for damage and health. and would help in adjusting the nobs we have on abilities etc for a more nuanced control and balancing factor.

SWM was designed to be easier to get into than D&D Minis, and thus had simpler rules. Keeping the damage at levels of 10 also makes it easier and quicker for people to calculate totals.
