I played on the weekend and was told that if you have someone on your team with recon than anyone in your squad can have line of sight to an enemy to gain the reroll.

That sounds funny to me but just wanted to clarify.

No, Recon only works if a character with the Recon ability has LoS to an enemy unit.

Okay - this has been up here before and it was decided the other way, I'm sure. That's why I made an ass of myself in the game KFC is talking about by argueing otherwise. The expanded ruling says: "If any character in the same squad with this special ability (including this character) has line of sight to an enemy, you can roll twice when making an initiative check and take either result." I read that to say that if any character in the same squad as the ability - not that it has to be that character. I'm backed up by the fact it says 'including this charcter' which surely is redundant if the rule is now how I am reading it.

The "including this character" is redundant now, but in earlier glossary definitions, it was worded in a way that sounded like you needed two characters with Recon for it to work.

Read the first part like this:

"If any character with this special ability in your squad has line of sight to an enemy"

No. You can't do that. You can't just say 'read it like this instead' otherwise that makes all rules subject to question. You need to explain it using the rule as it's written. Let's forget the 'including this character' rubbish. I can see it now, if you look at it standing a certain way - but, again, that's a viewpoint thing and not clear. It needs to be clear, because - as I said - I made a frikkin' ass of myself arguing the rule on the weekend based on what I read in the rule book WHICH EVERYONE ALWAYS SAYS TO CONSULT. If I sound angry, I'm friggin' ropable due to the fact that I only seem to get rules wrong when I play against that particular crowd and that annoys me.

When reading the word "with" in the definition it is implied that only characters that have the SA Recon gain the benefit from LOS. Not any characters in the same squad as the SA itself. The weird wording comes from the previous mis interpretation that u had to have 2 characters with recon in the squad to work. I can see how it can be misunderstood, but it is written correctly for the proper interpretation.

Game play wise it would make no sense for every character to benefit from a SA without being granted the SA. Also, the definition is way too convoluted to simply mean "if a character in this squad has LOS to an enemy, you may roll twice for initiative, picking your roll" or whatnot. the correct usage is only the character with recon has the recon bonus.

Did any of that help?

Helped a heap. I was in a particularly bad mood when I wrote that this morning and I apologise to Emperor and anyone else.

"This Character is considered an ass; Save 6" - I rolled a 4.

The reason the rule is worded this way is to ensure that it does not stack with itself.

If multiple characters with Recon have LOS to an enemy, you still only roll 2 dice for initiative.
